Portsmouth is now ranked among the leading modern universities, created from the former polytechnic sector in 1992. Applications are up more than 20% this year and student satisfaction is high. Our analysis of this year’s national student survey ranks Portsmouth 26= in the UK with a 77.8% score, based on students’ views on everything from teaching quality to learning resources. History (88.1%), sport (86.6%) and finance and accounting (86.5%) earned the highest scores.
Facilities are kept up to scratch with investment of more than £64m between 2001-8. This year, a building to house the cosmology and gravitation institute opened and next September the dental academy, the result of a partnership with King’s College London, will start training 80 students as dentists, technicians and nurses. Portsmouth has the UK’s first dedicated brain tumour research centre, and the centre for molecular design software helps develop drugs for pharmaceutical companies.
Courses taking their first students this term include creative and media writing, petroleum engineering, acute clinical healthcare, and cyber security. A student IT support centre is new this year, where trained staff are on hand to offer advice. Free wireless broadband access is available in the lounge area, and all student accommodation is wired for free high-speed internet access. Those who would like support getting a business off the ground can turn to the centre for enterprise, which helps current and former students, regardless of their course.
The university’s central facilities are a few minutes’ walk from four miles of seafront. Sailing on the Solent, skydiving and volleyball are among the sporting offerings and the university has produced elite athletes including Daniel Bentley, who won a gold medal in the 2008 Paralympics in the ball game boccia, and Sarah Webb and Chris Draper, Olympic medallists in sailing.
STUDENT VIEW
Steve Topazio, students’ union president:
First impressions The best of three lives: university, city and
seaside.
Worst feature Students living off-campus will have to learn to love
their local Portsmouth neighbours!
Facilities Most old facilities have been modernised and there are more
new buildings. One hall of residence comes complete with sea views.
Deal clincher Nearly half the student population gets involved in union
activities.
