Northampton students are quite simply spoilt for choice. Undergraduates can opt for a four-year degree with a strong work experience element, where they work two days a week or take up a sandwich course. A fast-track option enables them to complete a degree in two years, saving a year of tuition fees. Or, if they just want a regular three-year option, that’s available too.
An extensive range of subjects is offered and all students are allocated a personal tutor. Sports marketing, Third World development and arboriculture are some of the degrees on offer this year while new courses for 2010 include health and beauty marketing as well as heritage management.
Within walking distance of the town centre, the Avenue campus has seen a £3.5m investment including a new research centre and the refurbishment and upgrading of its main building. Northampton has also recently bought a grade II listed building for £10.9m next to the campus to expand facilities across the arts and sciences.
The university’s Park campus is set in 80 acres of open green parkland and boasts accommodation for more than 1,300 students. New facilities include a unique ambulance training suite, a dental surgery clinic and a moot room for criminal justice students. Both campuses have bars and restaurants.
About a third of students are mature and virtually all undergraduates are state-educated. Northampton has a wide package of higher education activities for schools and colleges including residential activities and taster days.
STUDENT VIEW
Eamon Lindsell, students’ union president:
First impressions You will certainly notice the investment with all the
new buildings on campus.
Worst feature The lecturers’ use of technology to communicate with
students is inconsistent.
Facilities Our new student centre offers you all the help you will
need.
Deal clincher The university offers you opportunities outside of your
course to further your career.
