Sir Colin Campbell has bequeathed his successor as vice-chancellor,
Professor David Greenaway, a university in the rudest of health. His 20-year
tenure as vice-chancellor was characterised by a boldness which has helped
establish Nottingham as a global player in higher education.
This international dimension is not measured just by Nottingham’s presence in Malaysia and China — these two overseas campuses offering courses delivered in English, many of them identical to those available in Nottingham — but by its recent success in the 2008 research assessment exercise (RAE).
Nottingham gained the equivalent of a 23.6% increase in research awards from the funding council, topping out at more than £50m in 2009-10, with overall research awards now standing at a record £130m. The university gained the biggest cash increase in research funding of any English university and secured top 10 UK rankings in 27 RAE subject areas.
With 33 subjects rated excellent for teaching, Nottingham has long demonstrated all-round academic strength. It dipped slightly in our rankings in recent years after less-than-spectacular results in early national student surveys (NSS). An overall Sunday Times satisfaction rating — based on all NSS outcomes — that stands broadly in the mid-70s%, ranking 46 this year, leaves it well adrift of rivals such as Loughborough and Exeter.
Facilities are coming on stream all the time, particularly at the Jubilee site in Nottingham . The latest phase of this development, opened earlier this year, contains a student services centre, lecture rooms and a cafe.
Bursaries and scholarships are generous, with £1,080 available to students recruited from families with annual income of less than £34,500.
At one point Nottingham was the most sought-after place in higher education. After a decline, applications are on the up once again. There are close to 4,000 places in university-owned student accommodation, starting from about £80 a week for a self-catering room.

everything on offer.
Worst feature Our huge student population makes tutors less accessible.
Facilities There’s an award-winning student-run theatre.
Deal clincher There is lots to do on campus besides your degree.
