Our University of the Year in 2004, UCL has continued to prosper in our and other university league tables. It currently lies seventh in the Times Higher Education world rankings and rises to its highest ever position in our table this year following its performance in the latest national research assessment exercise (RAE). Just Oxbridge and Manchester made more subject and staff submissions than UCL’s 49 and 1,793 respectively. Overall, UCL ranked fifth in the UK in our analysis of the 2008 RAE results, earning £104.5m in central research funding. Only Oxbridge gained more.
UCL has spent £3.8m on helping small businesses access its expertise and on developing the entrepreneurial abilities and skills in this summer’s graduates, all of which contributes to keeping its graduate unemployment rate close to the 5.4% achieved this year. The 85.6% who landed graduate-level jobs ranks UCL marginally above Oxford and Cambridge, with only Imperial College, LSE, Bath and the Robert Gordon performing better.
UCL bucks the general trend among inner-city institutions to produce above-average results in the student satisfaction survey. Academics across Britain rate it even higher, placing the university fourth across a range of 30 subjects in our exclusive survey.
About 45% of UK entrants benefit from bursaries. Thirty scholarships for those with outstanding school leaving grades are worth up to £5,000 a year.
STUDENT VIEW
Charlie Clinton, students’ union officer:
First impressions: Arriving in London can be daunting, but life in
halls can really help you to settle in.
Worst feature: Finding your way around the London transport system.
Facilities: The Quad is a great green space and is packed in the
summer.
Deal clincher: We have club nights in leading London venues.
