Loughborough won our University of the Year title in 2008, capping a run
of success that has lifted it to the fringes of our elite top 10. This is no
longer a university famous for its sporting endeavours alone.
Certainly if you are an elite athlete or want to study sport in a variety of
guises, Loughborough would be your top choice. The concentration of
outstanding sports facilities is the best to be found on-campus or anywhere
else in Britain, and the academic pedigree of its degrees — sporting or
otherwise — is now such that Loughborough graduates are highly sought-after.
More than 76% gained a job commensurate with their qualification last year
and their mean starting salary of £21,723 was £2,000 above the UK average.
It is no coincidence, given Loughborough’s success in official assessments of
teaching quality (ranking second to Cambridge since 1996), that it also does
well in the national student survey, with only Cambridge and Leicester among
multi-faculty universities marginally ahead in our analysis.
The new research assessments published last December further demonstrated Loughborough’s academic prowess. Virtually all departments entered contained some work considered to be world-leading, with 18% of research staff entered earning that accolade.
Four months ago, the Princess Royal opened the Clyde Williams building, home to the newly-formed school of sport, exercise and health sciences. Its opening marks the first stage in the development of the East Park area of Loughborough’s 437-acre campus, one of the biggest single campuses in Britain.
More than a quarter of students benefit from Loughborough bursaries, payable to all those from homes with incomes under £35,460.
STUDENT VIEW
Robert Hulne, students’ union president:
First impressions: A lot to take in, but plenty of support to help you
along.
Worst feature: The gale-force Loughborough winds.
Facilities: The halls of residence are the focal point of life at the
university.
Deal clincher: It’s a place where you will find real camaraderie.
