The self-dubbed “university for world-class professionals” is one of the largest providers of science, engineering and technology education in the country. It also boasts one of the biggest business schools, a global reputation for clothing design and technology and 16 subjects rated excellent for teaching under the now discontinued system of formal assessments. MMU’s areas of teaching excellence are wide-ranging, from art and design to organismal biosciences.
The university is a big provider of newly-qualified teachers and health professionals; more than four in five of its teaching graduates stay on and work in the northwest.
Applications to follow in the footsteps of alumni, including artist LS Lowry, by studying one of MMU’s 1,000 courses, are up by 13% this year.
The university has facilities throughout Manchester as well as campuses in Crewe and Alsager. Plans are afoot to consolidate the existing seven campuses onto three — two in the city centre and one in Crewe.
In preparation for 1,800 students moving from the Alsager site, Crewe’s facilities are undergoing a £40m development programme, which involves tripling the size of the students’ union.
Undergraduates on English courses will be familiar with the work of Carol Ann Duffy, whose poetry is a regular feature on GCSE and A-level syllabuses. The poet laureate is the creative director of the English department’s writing school and teaches the university’s MA in creative writing.
About two-thirds of freshers are housed in MMU accommodation, and the remainder can be housed in the 5,000-plus additional beds vetted by the university in the private sector.
More than two-thirds of first-years were awarded bursaries in 2008. Freshers are eligible for £475 if their household income falls below £40,000, and £1,025 if it is lower than £21,000.
STUDENT VIEW
Andy Hardwick, students’ union officer:
First impressions: The university is very much a part of a city that
brings out the artist in everyone.
Worst feature: Manchester is a very distracting city in which to study.
Facilities: We’re moving away from our 1970s buildings and investing in
cutting-edge developments.
Deal clincher: Each campus has a strong sense of community.
