From Middlesex to the Middle East and Mauritius, this university’s empire now stretches far beyond its original north London boundaries. With the Mauritius site joining the existing campus in Dubai next year, Middlesex now has two sunny alternatives to Hendon, Cat Hill and Trent Park.
Which is not to say that campuses closer to home are being neglected. Last September a £45m investment came to fruition at Hendon, with the opening of a science building and a student social centre. An extended nursery and new fitness suite also opened their doors for the first time last year. An art, design and media building is due to open in 2011.
The Trent Park and Cat Hill sites, which accommodate the school of arts and education, have enjoyed recent investment. Hendon houses the business school and school of health and social sciences, and the Archway site is where health programmes are taught, within easy reach of hospitals where students get hands-on experience.
It isn’t only healthcare students who get experience in the world of work. In 2005 the higher education funding council recognised Middlesex as a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Work Based Learning.
Middlesex is supporting its student athletes who have the potential to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games. The Future Gold scholarship rewards budding Olympic gold medallists with £30,000 over three years. A recent scholar, athlete Simeon Williamson, won a bronze medal in Britain’s sprint relay team at the world championships in Berlin last month.
The university’s sports facilities include a real tennis court, floodlit all-weather pitch and multi-use games areas at Hendon, and an outdoor swimming pool, sports hall and fitness centre at Trent Park.
A third of students are drawn from households with incomes lower than £17,910, and are eligible for a £310 bursary, and almost half are from the lowest social classes. The brightest get scholarships of up to £10,000, according to academic performance, none of which are means-tested.
