The one-time English capital city of Winchester provides a historic backdrop for study, and an inspiring setting for the university’s ancient and medieval archeology and art course, which is launched this term. Next year a degree in ancient, classical and medieval studies begins, but Winchester’s strengths aren’t restricted by the city’s rich history. Its six subject areas rated excellent for teaching are business and management, education, teacher training and nursing, as well as theology and religion studies and archeology.
Current development work on the main King Alfred campus includes the construction of a performing arts building, with dance and performance studios. There are plans to refurbish the existing studio space at West Downs, a site a short walk from the main campus, to develop the business school. Work on the campus’s new halls of residence is also under way.
Liz Yelling, the marathon runner, opened Winchester Sports Stadium at the university in May. It cost £3.5m and includes a 400m eight-lane athletics track.
As well as 52% of students qualifying for means-tested bursaries of up to £820, a generous scholarship scheme is on offer for everyone who pays full tuition fees. It effectively discounts this year’s £3,225 fee by a minimum of £205 in each year of study. There are other scholarships for the most academically able.
STUDENT VIEW
Jimmy Weighell, students’ union president:
First impressions A small university with big ambitions.
Worst feature You get a workout whether you want one or not thanks to
all the steep hills.
Facilities Always developing — a new building has opened each of the
three years I’ve been here.
Deal clincher Being a small university with a family atmosphere means
it’s easier to stand out.
