Waterford — our 2009 Institute of Technology of the Year — has the republic’s lowest graduate unemployment rate at just 0.8%. It generated just over €18m of competitive research income last year, and the amount per academic was second-best in the IT sector. New courses include a BSc (Hons) in entertainment systems.

The institute is spread between three campuses and student services vary. The main site is at Cork Road, a mile outside the city. It houses the library, nursing school and a €25m tourism and leisure building. Architectural, engineering and science, business and student services buildings are due to open there in the coming years.

Waterford is a small, student-friendly coastal city. It is middle of the price range for accommodation and about 75% of first-years live in one of 520 college-owned or 1,877 privately-owned study bedrooms. They cost from €73 (twin room) to €87 (single en-suite) a week.
