This weekend the Frieze Art Fair continues in London, where hundreds of known and unknown artists show off their work. From hypnotists to plastic bags filled with human urine, there’s always something on show to surprise and shock.
Frieze isn’t just about selling art; it’s also about making art. A group of North London schoolchildren visited the art fair and made sculptures in the style of an artist called Marcel Duchamp.
Duchamp thought that by taking an ordinary object and changing it a little or placing it in a different position, you could say something new and original. His style was called Readymade. In 1917, he shocked the art world with his work Fountain — a urinal with a signature on it.
Thankfully, the children from Highbury Grove School haven’t been messing around with toilets. They made a sculpture called Nike Air Mop. It’s a figure of a person, with a CD rack for a spine, carrot-like hair and a mop that looks like one of a pair of Nike Air Max trainers.
Frieze Education creative workshops for 5 to 12-year-olds are running this Saturday and Sunday at 11.30am at Frieze Art Fair. Sign up on the day.
If you’d like to try your luck at being a rebellious modern artist, why not have a go at making a Readymade sculpture yourself. Here’s how . . .
1. Gather all your objects
You will need:
1. A stool or a chair 2. A bag of the same vegetables or fruit eg, carrots,
potatoes, oranges or lemons 3. Two household objects like a mop head, brush
handle, bin bag or pillow 4. Something to fix it all together, eg, parcel
tape, Sellotape, string, cable ties, clingfilm
2. Experiment with different combinations of objects
See what the materials do — how they bend, stretch or balance. Do you put the stool right way up, sideways, or upside down? Think about how you balance or hide objects. Do you put all the vegetables in a pile or separate them out?
3. Experiment again with different combinations of objects
Don’t settle for your first idea — you can go crazy! Will it be tall or wide, down on the floor or hung from the ceiling? When you are happy with your final sculpture give it a title. Then show your parents your new artwork and enjoy the fireworks.
