HUNTINGDON When Sainsbury’s began urging customers to “try something new today”, it’s unlikely that anyone at the supermarket chain had toad on a bed of herb salad in mind.
Jessanne De’Ath, from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, was unpacking her groceries when she found a natterjack toad, an endangered species in Britain, in her bag of salad. The 7cm (2in) toad is thought to have travelled from Portugal, where the salad was packed.
Ms De’Ath pierced holes in the bag and took it to her local council’s environmental health department. Her next port of call was Sainsbury’s, which gave her a £10 voucher. “I won’t be spending it on salad,” she said.
A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “An Environmental Health Officer has been informed and is investigating this thoroughly.”

Once bought bag of little cheeses from coop and 2 days later camemberg was crawling out of fridge by itself. Took it back to store and manager nearly had heart attack, it was hilarious. Only got cost of cheese back though.

The toad was passed on to a toad enthusiast (bufologist?) where it is currently recuperating. But it will have to remain in a tank in case it contaminates the native species with disease.
Marcus, London,
This reminds me of the time in my youth when I worked as a waiter at an high class restaurant called the Mad Hatter (no longer exists) in Guildford and I served a customer a piece of ripe camembert cheese on a small plate and almost immediately I put it down in front of him a small maggot started wriggling across the plate .The very professional restaurant manager told the customer this would enhance the flavour of the cheese and that was end of the matter and the cheese was duly devoured (by the customer rather than the maggot). This was I should add a one off.
