The national Fish and Chip Shop of the Year competition, organised by the industry body Seafish, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
The idea for the competition came from the friers themselves back in 1987, with the first competition held in 1988, which saw Toff’s of Muswell Hill in London becoming chippy champion.
The shops will be judged this year by a selection of industry representatives including previous winners, industry writers and members of organisations such as Seafish, the British Potato Council and the National Federation of Fish Friers.
The ten regional finalists face a strict judging criteria, gauging each finalist’s dedication to areas such as cleanliness, customer service and providing a quality product as well as their committment to building a sustainable future for the industry by sourcing their fish from well-managed stocks.
The winner will be announced by celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott on January 23 in London. Tell us about your favourite chippy in the comment box at the bottom of the page.
TOP 10 CHIPPIES
1. The Townhead Café (Biggar, Scotland)
185 High Street, Biggar, ML12 6DJ (T: 01899 221001; www.townheadbiggar.com)
Recently announced as Scotland’s number one chippy, the Townhead Café is a splendid, family-run business sourcing predominantly fresh Scottish haddock from sustainable waters off Shetland. An excellent example of a community fish and chip shop, it is a welcome stop for a heart-warming plate of fish and chips.
2. Taylor’s Fish & Chips (Pennygraig, Wales)
66 Tylacelyn Road, Pennygraig, Tonypandy, Mid Glamorgan, CF40 1JU (T: 01443 442062; www.taylorsfish.co.uk)

The best fish and chips by a country mile - perfectly fresh and cooked to order. Well worth the 600 mile round trip. . . OK, I didn't go JUST for fish & chips, but I'd be seriously tempted.
Ron Graves, Birkenhead, UK
The Admiral in Killamarsh Sheffield
Cod as big as whales and mountains of chips.....
Tina - Killamarsh Sheffield
Tina Schofield, sheffield, soth yorks
Very surprised LIghtwoods Chippy in Birmingham has'nt been mentioned. I travel 6 miles every Friday for my Fish n Chips. Chips are spot on and the Cod is always cooked fresh with crispy light batter. Spot on! I believe there in the National Fish & Chip shop competition 2008. GOOD LUCK LIGHTWOODS!!!
Paddy, Birmingham,
Barn Lane Chippy in Mansfield, Notts do the best cod and haddock, fresh daily from Scotland, simply the best.......... Oh and it's run by my parents.
James, Mansfield, Notts
Glad to see someone mentioned Chez Fred in Westbourne Bournemouth. Take away or eat in restaurant with a glass of wine. At very busy times they bring round fresh chips to people queueing. Excellent.
Margaret Pearson, Orpington, Kent
Okay for London folks in W1 i'd say try the Golden Hind on Marylebone lane, very old school all freshly cooked and perfect chips, Fish Bone on Cleveland Street, for fantastic fish crispy light batter and finally Sea Shell on Lisson Grove. Tried Toms Plaice and that was just overrated and priced!!!!
Arvind, Fitzrovia,
As a boy we always used to go to a van in Ullapool - (was it in Argyle Street?...can't remember where it parked) - but it was certainly the best haddock and chips I've had. Always have haddock, never cod.
Now in Cornwall I'd say one of the better places is in Truro - Ocean Blue, in Trelander...
Matt, Truro, Cornwall
The Codfather in Poole by the dockside is simply the best I've had.
Nick, Woking, UK
The best fish and chips i have ever had were at the Kea Cafe on Oban, Stewart Island, New Zealand. A long way to go admittedly but almost worth the several thousand mile travel. Make sure you get the blue cod and chips. Best eaten when its raining outside.
Duncan Bogie, York, UK
The wetherby whaler does it for me - its a famous stopping off point for coach trips - many football coaches stop out there on the way back from an away victory or defeat. and 1 thing - beef dripping - thats what makes them good - the reason no london shops are in.. they are rubbish - plus no scraps
Steve, Leeds, UK
Absolute tosh.
All the best fish and chip shops are in Yorkshire, Drakes in Knaresborough being a prime example.
Vernon, Hull, Republic of Yorkshire
I cant believe you havn't included The Wetherby Whaler...! Widely known as the best F&C shop in the whole of Yorkshire - it even has its own poem. How many F&C shops have this?
I love the Wetherby Whaler
It may not be by the sea
But the fish and chips you get there
are fresh as they can be
Jackie, Luxembourg , Luxembourg
Fishers on Fulham High Street makes the best cod & chips in London
Sandra, London,
I think that f and c is overrated. A good piece of fish usually gets ruined by the batter. Best I remember was when surfing near Brisbane.. Tremendous range of fish fried in a batter of your choice. (I live round the corner from the Sea Cow btw!).
Although now tempted to try Ollie's. Thanks Cate!
Graeme, London, UK
What, no mention of gravy?
The writer must be a Southerner.
Julian Whettam, Istanbul, Turkey
Having tried fish and chips throughout the uk, there is one plaice that stands out for me and thats barneys in wadebridge, cornwall. rick steins maybe close by but all our guests swear by barneys and i cant get enough of it. I look forward to fridays.
gary mackay, bromley, kent
As a Scot on holiday from Australia a few years ago, I had the good luck in finding "PELLIGRINI'S" at the bottom of Christmas steps in Bristol. You have never tasted what 'fish & chips' should be like until you visit this great little restaurant, it was absolutely beautiful .
John Whyte, Phlpns
john whyte, bacolod, philippines
the best fish and chip shop has to be the magpie in whitby north yorkshire.
patricia leigh, oundle peterborough, england
There is a really wonderful fish & chip shop in Jersey in the channel islands, in Gorey Village, they are called Entwhistles , i think they have a website , really nice fish and chips they also do fresh jersey scallops in breadcrumbs.
Alice , Jersey, UK
ANYWHERE except Harry Ramsdens. The original Harry Ramsdens in Guiseley used to serve the finest fish & chips to be had anywhere - and some of the early franchises were of a similar quality. But grasping big business has done away with that now, and quality has given way to 'branding'. A real shame.
Keith Black, Chelmsford, England
Well after reading about Hanbury's i went to torquay at the weekend to give them a try, to be honest i didnt think they were anything special, the chips were not very nice and i couldnt eat them, batter wasnt very crispy and i didnt think the fish tasted that fresh.
gerry, bristol, avon
Hanbury's in Torquay certainly do produce good fish & chips but they are certainly one of the most expensive take-aways and the meanest. The last take away I had you could nearly count the chips you got on two hands - in the wrapper there was just 12 chips!
michael, chelston, uk
Armstrongs in Polefield, Pestwich - never seen such huge fish as their Jumbos - and they are delicious with thin crispy batter. Chips are delicious, a lovely golden colour. Everything piping hot too and freshly cooked whilst you wait. Well worth the trip!
Anita, Bolton, Lancashire, UK
I did a fish & chip tour of southern UK. I rated them according to freshness, quality of chips & batter, mode of delivery (paper or plastic) affordability and flavour.
Rick Stein's came near last, expensive, miserly and terrible chips. The winner was Oggies in Newport I.OW. Juicy and delicious!
Darryl Fry, Noosa, Australia
We tried the Blue Dolphin in Hastings.
Must be the worst Fish and Chips ever.
Surly service, shrivelled up hard chips, manky fish dripping in oil and, no greaseproof paper layer, so the paper was stuck to the food when unwrapped.
One to miss
Ray Walker, London,
Steels in Cleethorpes - ive been going there since a young boy - 38 now and always fantastic fish - going Monday all being well
James Finch, Newark UK,
ohh try 803 hessle high road in hull gypsieville named just fish&chips ask for a freshly coocked one you will love itbest maris piper chips and haddock i wish i could help the poor lad to become the best one he deserves it worth trying it and well cheap.
nik, leeds, west yorkshire
The best fish and chips by far are from the Fisherman in Settle, North Yorks, just down from Ingleton. I've had fish and chips in Manchester, Cheshire, Huddersfield, Leeds, Scarborough and Devon but have found these to be the best, just pipping to the post the fish and chips in Woolacombe, Devon.
I used to go hiking when I was a lot younger (talking 15 odd years ago now) and I drove back there last Friday from south of Manchester with a mate and they are still great.
Nothing better than their haddock and chips.
Absolutely gorgeous.
Dave Birdsall, Poynton,
The number one ! fleetwoods ( fishing Town ) It has to be the Granada fish bar & retaurant , the q speaks for its self .Fantastic fish and chips made from maris pipers ! the batter is something else !!! .The awards are all over the walls , and well desrved . Its 15 mins out of Blackpool , try it !
steve martell, poulton-le-fylde, lancashire
There's asuperb fish & chip place just outside Cobham & Stoke d'Abernon (Surrey) station. Freshest tasting fish I've ever had from a fish & chip shop! And you can give them a call as your train is on its way, and pick up your order 15minutes later.
Wonderful.
Alex, London,
We rather like Anstruther Fisheries in Anstruther, Fife which won several awards, generated long queues and was reported to be "Prince William's favourite chippy" when he was at university in St Andrews. The business changed hands a few years ago and we haven't tried it since.
Also, no mention for Rick Stein's place on the quay in Padstow? It's not bad, but the taste of beef dripping tends to overpower the delicate fish flavours and linger on.
Doug Short, Edinburgh,
There's a fantastic chippy in Twyford, Berks. Can't remember what it's called but it's the best I've ever been in in 50 odd years!!!
LR Berks
Lindy Rees, Wargrave, UK
I noticed McDermottâs Fish & Chips on the way to Surbiton from Bromley 10years ago. Every Japanese friends I took said best ever tasted.
Hatsumi, Sanderstead,
Very surprised not to see the Blue Dolphin in the old town Hastings on the list, and several readers have commented on this. We always visited the Blue Dolphin when we went to see my Gran at St Leonards on Sea. Unfortunately she died age 99 and 3/4 a couple of years ago. We miss our seaside fish & chips with bread and butter and a cup of tea.But I can highly recommend the A&C chip shop on the Warwick Road Banbury. Excelent fish & chips and first class service!.although take away only.
Becca, Banbury, Oxon
What has happend to the Yorkshire chippys? Ask anyone who knows their chips and the Wetherby Whaler comes top of the list - you don't even use Haddock down south!!!!!
Richard Groom, Wetherby (of course), West Yorkshire
I strongly recommend the chip shop on the village green iin Meriden (between Coventry and Birmingham). Consistently high standard and well worth going out of your way for.
Clive Evrall
Clive Evrall, Fillongley, Warwickshire
Meriden (between Birmingham and Coventry)chipshop on the village green is consistently good and well worth a detour.
Clive Evrall
Clive Evrall, Fillongley, Warwickshire
fish and chips is actually a Peruvian dish called Jalea con papas fritas. Think about it, thousands of miles of pacific coastline, and the land where the humble potato was discovered. Peruvians were eating fish and chips while Brits -- from North or South -- were still burning the cakes.
Arturo Cavero, New York, NY, USA
The best is Grumpy's Chip Shop, formerly The Rock Chippy, Rock Road, Rock Cornwall. The fish and chips are absolutely fabulous and all is cooked fresh to order. I haven't found any better !
Roger, Rock, Cornwall
My Grandfather made the best fish and chips in Britain in his Fish Mongers shop in Downing Street, Farnham, Surrey. The chippies up in the North try to emulate his skills but without success.
Christopher Larmer, Sai Kung, Hong Kong
Where are all the Lancashire chippys then? since Fish n Chips all started in Lancashire no matter what the southerners say.
Barbara (Ex Lancs), WA., USA
no contest. the magpie in whitby is the best, for food, location, & all-round atmosphere. its like going back in time & getting all the best from a bygone age, with the added extra of beatifully cooked fresh fish.
no chain. no heavy commercialism. one location utterly unique.
michael holden-rea, london,
Definitely the Magpie in Whitby. More of a fish and chip restaurant than a shop, and pricier than other places in whitby, but worth it.
Nick, Nottingham,
Hanburys! Fabulous. Their food is criminally, artery-cloggingly good. Once you start buying from there, you literally cannot stop. Everywhere else seems to pale in comparison.
Tara, Newton Abbot,
I visit England every two years & a trip to Whitby always includes a visit to The Magpie for fish & chips. Delicious.
John, Montreal, Quebec , Canada
As a Sheffielder now resident in Torquay I have to say Hanbury's is superb and well worth the accolade. Buy your meal then eat it on the clifftops at Babbacombe on a sunny day with the stunning view over the South Devon coast. Perfection!
Paul, Torquay,
The chippie on the harbour front in Portree, Isle of Skye. End of.
John Kirriemuir, Berneray, Outer Hebrides,
this is a very welcome addition to your site. i enjoy reading about such things as well as the more serious stuff . my only concern is when do the jamie olivers etc, suddenly decide that fish and chips aren't good for you and hay presto these boys will be on the ropes . please keep supporting these local small businesses as you can see there doing a great job keep it up people your one of the last few bastions of englishness left
nigel, leicester, leicestershire
I've never eaten a fish and chips, but I believe you.
DJ in PA, Muncy, Pennsylvania USA
Nothing like a fresh piece of snapper, eh Kiwis.
frank mccallister, edinburgh,
3 words : - Cox's of Letchworth.
Won a few years ago and is still fabulous. As good as some in Devon and Yorkshire (I get around a lot!)
Madelaine, Hitchin, Herts
Louise, London: you've clearly never sampled the delights of the Rock and Sole Plaice in Covent Garden. It's the best fish and chips I have ever tasted, and being able to sit outside on a summer day with a bottle of wine with your food is just perfection. I have never tasted anything that comes close to their fish and chips, and believe me, I've sampled more than my fair share!
Lola, Ascot, Berkshire
None from London?
Lookman Olateju, El-Sobrante, California, U.S.A
More than happy to be corrected but I am sure the word 'piscine' means swimming pool and therefore 'For all your piscine needs visit Times Online's Fresh Fish counter' (see top of page) is a tad odd?!!
Tessa, Taunton, UK
I meant to say "a bit fishy" -is it possible to correct??
Matilda Mary, Portishead,
MMM In Ullapool, there is the BEST fish and chips i have EVER tasted!!!!!!
It's definately worth a visit!!!!!!!!!!!!
G Handy, Newbury, Berkshire, UK
The one and only place to eat fish & chips ( with mushy peas )if you are wanting the best of experiences is STEELS RESTAURANT in the MARKET PLACE, CLEETHORPES.
Cosy, clean and bookable..very popular.
Diane Duell, North Hykeham / Lincoln, uk
"Why aren't any places in London listed?"
Yes, because there always has to be something from London. Obviously.
I've been to at least 2 of the chip shops listed, and I can agree 100% with their assessment :)
Mark, Skelmersdale, Lancs, UK
well done to the top 10. BUT FOR THE WINNER TRY CHURCHILL'S FISH BAR IN RISCA NEWPORT SOUTHWALES .i travel from canada to visit every year . the proof is in the chips .
dave g, toronto, canada
Launceston fryers serve a great plate too!
karen, Okehampton, devon
Oh Dear, none of them are within walking distance of me. At least my waistline will be thankful.
Neil, Gloucestershire, England
No "Mary Jane's" in Cromer???- A fishy without this one. Worth travelling across the country for-especially to a Norfolk exile!
Matilda Mary, Portishead,
No1 Fish & Chips, Tunbridge Wells is definitely worth a visit when you're next in town.
Tom, Tunbridge Wells, UK
The Harbour View, Deganwy ( N Wales ). Each meal better than the last! Wonderful fresh fish from various suppliers. Astonishingly generous portions. Perfect fish cooked in clean oil. Kindly, cheery staff. Also a splendid cafe attached.
PH , Wirral.
PH, walllasey, merseyside
Not a single chip shop in Yorkshire?! Either they can't be bothered entering or the competition is a sham!
john, northwich,
No Harry Ramsden's?
Chris Irwin, Dorchester, UK
I just read louise comment about the chips in london. If she thinks they are bad there come to the USA . The best chips I have ever ate was in london. The chips here are really bad...
tom, lincoln, calif
They all look like winners, the fish and chips look so delicious & mouth watering. Congratulations to all the nominees and best of luck.
Lisa, Melbourne, Australia
10 good reasons why the UK is THE must-visit vacation destination in Europe. Thanks for the Top 10... drool... and triple drool...
S K Lin, HongKong,
What about John Ogden's Fish & Chips Shack on the pier at Oban?
Roger Hillbrook, Del Mar, CA , USA
Have none of your correspondents ever visited the excellent fish and chip shops in Aldeburgh, Suffolk ? Always queues outside them even in the rain. They are legendary and. perhaps, the best kept secret. Don't want the queues to get any longer, do we ?
Dr. Jimmy, Nottingham, England
Three in Hastings in with a shout. The Lighthouse or the Blue Dolphin or Maggies at lunchtime
rog, battle, uk
There is a website that allows everyone to "vote" for your favourite restaurant, hotel, estate agent or tradesmen - it is www.directoryof.co.uk. Its free and I think it's brilliant.
Iain Gunn, Reading, Berkshire
No The Golden Plaice of Weybridge? - reason enough to live in Surrey!
Arnold Ward, Weybridge, Surrey, UK
I'd love to know how they are judged, nominated and selected. I have used Broughton chip shop, and the one down the road at Walnut tree is far far better... for speed of service, quality of fish and quality of chips. Matey at Broughton just runs around telling everybody his place must be great because he's in this top ten thing - and charging extra for the fact.
Paulo, Milton Keynes,
Apparently there are no good fish and chip shops in the whole of london...but somewhere in Milton Keynes made the cut?!?
Alastair, London, UK
Got to be the Blue Dolphon in Hastings pure quality? Nothing else comes close.
John, Birmingham,
I can't believe you left out Fryer's Delight off Lamb's Conduit, north of Kingsway in London! It's one of the few places the health nazis haven't raided and taken away the beef drippings from the fryer vat. I consider a trip to the UK worthwhile only if I get a takeaway from that singular chippie.
Buck, Birmingham, Alabama USA
To all of you lucky enough to live near great fish and chip shops - a plea.
I live in the southern United States. Can someone - please - teach restauranteurs here how to make chips? Oh sure, I'd love it if we could have just one acceptable fish and chip shop within 500 miles but I'm setting my sights lower than that.
Just one place that even understands what a chip is (instead of the variety of chip failures that are shovelled over counters here.)
John Blackley, Winter Garden, Florida
I agree with Simon-
'Wetherby whaler' fantastic food there.
Laura, Wetherby, UK
To those who've commented on London: I'm a Londoner and I've eaten my fair share of fish and chips over the years and I have to say the best I've had have been up North in areas like Whitby as well as in some Southern coastal areas.
London chippies (in my humble opinion) just don't come close. They are generally of poorer quality than their coastal counterparts and cost at least twice as much.
Louise, London,
Number 8 is technically in Greater London - Borough of Croydon. And it is superb.
Nic, Coventry, UK
Another vote for Grimsby Fisheries in Leicester.
How could you possibly omit this legendary Fish and Chip shop.
Shame on you
Colin F, Leicester,
"Contrary to popular belief not everyone lives in London".
I find that very hard to believe.
Steve, London,
No mention of Grimsby/Cleethorpes! The quality of the Haddock served in practically every size of chip shop and fish restaurant there is unsurpassed, let alone some wonderfully flavoursome batter recipes. Perhaps the high consistency of the place makes it more dificult to single out just one chip shop - that's the only possible reason for such a glaring omission.
David Edwards, Darlington, UK
The Lighthouse in Wanstead East London is superb. Top notch chips and thick end of fresh cod in crispy batter.
Mark, Leytonstone, UK
No Blue Dolphin in Hastings? Unbelievable.
Dan Harris, London, UK
Seniors have another shop in Staining, just between Blackpool and Poulton and again it is an excellent place to eat their fish & chips.
I always have one meal there if I am in the area.
Jeff, Purley, UK
Fish and chips is a wonderful meal - cooked properly.
You would think that a dish that had only 2 ingredients (3 if you count the batter, 4 if you include the fat to fry it in) could come out of the fryer so differently from one establishment to another, but it does. Often quite inedible.
I saw a TV program of a college where they taught a course for prospective fish and chip shop owners.
The emphasis was on how to cut a fillet of thick fish to appear much bigger and flatter so that more profit was made.
Is it any wonder you have to travel miles for a good meal of what once used to be our national dish.
When you've finished with chickens Jamie, show us how it should be cooked.
GJB, Slough, Berkshire
Dave from York - a vested interest in 'Quayside' perhaps? :)
Chris P Batter, norwich, norfolk
Mabinogion Chippy in Bethesda, North Wales! Used to have MASSIVE portion sizes for very little money with absolutley beautiful fish AND chips. they have downsized recently but still worth the cash!! :D
Carly Jones, Rachub,
I cast my vote for the celestial lord of the south London deep fat fryer that is Olleys in Herne Hill. Turns the humble potato into a truly patrician chip and the biddable cod fillet into something approaching gustatory nirvana. Truly the Ron Jeremy of food porn.
Cate, London,
Chez Fred in Westbourne,Bournemouth is missing from the list. The best fish and chips I've had in years and the service by the staff is first class.
Bryn Davies, St.Malo, Brittany France
The Fryers Delight - Holborn - excellent
Tony, Plymouth,
best British Fish and Chip restaurant is in NEW YORK - the very excellent A Salt and Battery. It's run by Mat Arnfield from Lancashire and surpasses anything I have ever had in the UK.
I met Heston Blumenthal in here when he was reviewing it for his BBC series perfection - if anyone is ever over this side of the atlantic, I highly recommend it!
http://www.asaltandbattery.com/
Andy C, New York, NY
What's your point Nick? None of those shops are in London.
Seaside fish & chips are always best. There's one in Whitstable I really like..but like most real fish & chip shops no-one knows its name
Mikey, Bromley, Kent
Contrary to popular belief not everyone lives in London
Nick, liverpool,
The North Sea Fish restaurant off Cartwright gardens (WC1, London) should be on there - great variety of fish, good trout.
nicest chips ever =]
Hannah, London,
Without a doubt Grimsby Fisheries on the Welford Road in Leicester should be on the list. HUGE fish portions and very well priced; £3.99 for a 15 inch + piece of cod and £1.20 for a portion of chips that could feed four! Brilliant unrivalled taste too!
Rich, Leicester, UK
You missed off Ollies in Herne Hill just by Brockwell Park... It's fantastic...
garryw, london,
But most of these places are MILES from the sea. Hastings now, the Mermaid - among many others!
Kathryn , hastings, east sussex
Why aren't any places in London listed?
Herman, London, UK
Try Flounders in Flookburgh, the batter on their fish is second to none. ps I have no vested interest in saying this, it's just a fact !!
Martin, Crewe, uk
i have been in western australia now for 36years, and they try hear to make fish and chips but they havent quiet made it yet, after seeing the photos of what real fish and chips look like i was watering at the mouth, please please send me some.
colin west, benger , western australia
The Woodseats Fisheries Chesterfield Road, Sheffield.
Lovely fish (cod or haddock), in light ,crunchy batter, generous helpings of chips all fried in small batches in proper beef dripping, and real mushy peas. All cooked in small batches, so you may have to wait, but well worth it.
Oh, and cheerful, friendly staff!
Sam, Sheffield, S Yorks
A second vote for Grimsby Fisheries on Welford Road in Leicester. I've been going there since the early 70's and it does the best chips I've ever tasted and their Pukka Pies are to die for.
matt, Norwich,
"Wetherby Whaler" - Market Place Wetherby - Yorks
10/10
Simon Napier, Nottingham, England
"Quayside" Whitby, North Yorkshire.
A choice of succulent, tasty fish, cod, halibut, plaice and of course Whitby scampis all fresh off the boat, perfectly fried in a crispy coating of batter that's so light it melts in the mouth and 'handcut' chips from good quality potatoes. The shop has a restaurant attached which is remarkable for the speed and friendliness of service and whether you eat in or purchase to take away, prices are very reasonable making this one of the best-value eating places around.
Dave, York, England
Thanks for that, but I think they might be cold by the time we get them home!
Billy Bop, London, UK
