Made properly, sangria is delicious. (If you think it sounds naff, call it summer red- wine punch.) Serve it immediately or cover with clingfilm and refrigerate for up to two hours. Ice isn’t essential, but on a hot day, put two cubes in a glass before pouring.

Juice of 1 orange
1 small glass of brandy
1 tbsp sugar
1 bottle of fruity, full-bodied red wine, chilled
1 orange, sliced
1 lemon, sliced
Lemonade, chilled

Put the orange juice and brandy in a pitcher. Stir in the sugar. When dissolved, add the wine, orange and lemon slices. Top up with lemonade — anything from half the quantity of wine up to the same amount, depending on how strong you want it.
