New sparkling sweet version, made from an apple variety specially chosen to produce low-alcohol but intense flavour; 2.5% abv (selected Sainsbury’s).

Goldfinch, RJ Sheppy, £1.59 for 50cl

Sparkling dry Somerset cider that has been around since the 1930s, but never before in a main supermarket. As winner of the cider category in the 2008 Tesco Drink Awards (open to products that have no national retail listing), its prize is to be in 234 Tesco stores; 7% abv.

Two new regional ciders: a medium-dry from Somerset and a softer medium cider from Devon; 5.8% abv (Waitrose).

Brothers Lemon & Mixed Pear Cider, £21.45 for 12 x 50cl

A cross between lemonade and sweet perry (pear cider). Rolled out this year after a successful road test at the 2007 Glastonbury festival; 4% abv (brotherscider.co.uk, pubs).
