The secret recipe for the perfect bacon sandwich has finally been exposed by triple Michelin star winner Marco Pierre White.
The celebrated chef thinks he has the answer to creating an ideal crisp and tasty rasher: the microwave.
“Why do I want to wash a grill tray? Why do I want to make a mess? When I cook my bacon I have only one plate to wash up. It tastes better and it's practical. Every household needs one [a microwave]," White said.
White retired from being a professional chef in 1999 to build up his gastronomic business empire, but he still appears on cookery programmes including recent appearances on Hell’s Kitchen.
He feels his expertise allows him to disregard Leeds University scientists who claimed last year that they had come up with a mathematical formula for the ideal bacon butty.
They found that two or three back bacon rashers should be cooked under a preheated oven grill for seven minutes at about 240C (475F).
The bacon should then be placed between two slices of farmhouse bread, 1cm to 2cm thick.
White has been ignoring that advice for the past 15 years. "It comes out better in a microwave. It will revolutionise your kitchen," he will tell chefs on ITV tomorrow night.
Star struck cooks should be warned though, the enfant terrible of British cooking has a record of less than salubrious recommendations.
In an interview last year, he said: "Knorr is the best f***ing ingredient in the world, let's not kid ourselves. Knorr chicken stock cubes? Genius product. Every kitchen should have a packet. The problem is most people don't know how to use it."
He also praised ketchup ("a great sauce"), Coleman's mustard and Worcestershire sauce, which he says he has used to make "the most delicious sauce in the world to serve with beef".
