2 for 1 at Pizza Express
What would your perfect home bar be? A Formica-topped work bench with a couple of stools and “his’n’hers” cocktail umbrellas à la Del Boy? Or something more classic, perhaps – an old-fashioned globe that swivels open to reveal an officer-class collection of spirits in cut-glass decanters?
When five celebrities from the worlds of film, fashion and design were invited to bring their own ideas to life, the results were rather grander in scale. No discreet drinks cabinets tucked away in the corner of the sitting room for them. David Furnish, Elton John’s partner, was inspired by a recent trip to India and went for the last word in mobile catering, a riotously decorated tuk-tuk which he describes as an “Aladdin’s cave with a Seventies-inspired colour scheme”. Giles Deacon, fresh from the glories of London Fashion Week, gave the traditional pub bar a makeover, complete with Swarovski crystals, while shoe designer Patrick Cox sought inspiration from Studio 54 to create the ultimate disco bar.
It’s not all high glamour, though. GT’s, by Brit artist Gavin Turk, owes more to the beach shack than the West End nightclub. “It’s inspired by what you find in street rubbish,” he says. “From far away, it looks beautifully designed, but close up it is clear that it is a washed-up bar made from things that have been thrown away – used materials, sun-bleached products and cans crushed by cars.”
After five months in the making, the bars, commissioned by Grey Goose vodka, are to be auctioned next week to benefit the Elton John Aids Foundation. Times readers who wish to see them can apply for free tickets to Thursday’s Grey Goose Character & Cocktails party in London at www.greygoosecharacter.com.
