Some people remember Michael Jackson with musical tributes, some with pilgrimage to Neverland, but diners in London will be able to celebrate the flamboyance of the King of Pop in a traditionally-informed, English manner: with funeral jellies.
The innovative food and event company Bompas & Parr has created black cherry and Champagne jellies set with 24-carat gold to honour the moonwalking megastar. East London restaurant Bistrotheque will be serving jellies today for Jackson's memorial service and funeral.
Historically, mourners ate individual "funeral cakes", typically wrapped in black crepe paper and moulded to depict motifs such as skulls and roses. Bompas & Parr is in the process of creating specially designed moulds for funerals.
"The funeral jelly is both sombre and celebratory. It reminds us of our food heritage and is a fitting tribute to the King of Pop," says David Waddington of Bistrotheque.
"Funeral cakes were made using moulds, much like jellies, so it’s been interesting to design the funeral jelly moulds," says jellymonger Sam Bompas. "Original funeral moulds were made in metal, wood and ceramic with motifs including the three plumes that decorate hearses, roosters, symbolising resurrection, and Masonic symbols. Our funeral jellies are designed in the shape of the ancient pyramids.”
English jellies have been experiencing a renaissance of late, appearing at trendy events and weddings. Bompas and Parr has gained a reputation for creating some of the most eye-catching and architectural versions available. Its specialty flavours and scientifically constructed moulds have resulting in a bright orange St Paul's Cathedral and a multicoloured version of Madrid's Barajas airport.
This week the company launched its funeral jelly service, which has evolved out of its traditional wedding jelly service.
