Urban Angel, 121 Hanover Street, Edinburgh; 0131 225 6215
This Edinburgh cafe/deli has its ethical heart firmly in the right place. Although not always strictly organic, the food is always seasonal, local or fair trade, with menu choices stretching from eggs benedict and porridge with heather honey (Urban Angel is regularly voted the best place in Scotland for breakfast) to daily risottos, salads and tapas dishes such as fennel pork belly with homemade chutney. The combination of good cooking, good intentions and bargain prices has given it a loyal following – be prepared to wait or be disappointed.
Daylesford Organic, near Kingham, Gloucestershire; 01608 731700
Lady Bamford’s Cotswolds idyll has become a byword for all that is chic in the organic world. At the on-site cafe – all pale woods and purchase-driving smells – the staff wear linen aprons and the beatific smile of the culinarily righteous. On the menu for the well-heeled clientele: posh sarnies, coffee, cakes and anything the Daylesford kitchen happens to be cooking that day. Londoners can get a preview at the urban outpost in Sloane Square.
Percy’s, Virginstow, Devon; 01409 211236
This hotel restaurant isn’t just organic – it’s as close to zero-food-miles cooking as it gets. Chef Tina Bricknell-Webb uses vegetables and herbs from the garden, as well as seasonal game, home-grown lamb and pork from the Large Black pigs on the 130-acre estate. Poultry comes from Exmoor, while fish is brought in daily from Looe. Cooking (the likes of ham hock terrine with caperberries to start, or rare lamb with rosemary) is suitably restrained to make sure the ingredients are the star.
