Severn Trent Water has been voted the best tasting regional tap water in Britain by a panel of experts.
For the blind taste test, held at Tom’s Kitchen, a restaurant in Chelsea, each water sample was given a number and then marked on a scale of one to five for its clarity, smell and, most importantly, taste. Each panellist was also asked to pick out his or her personal favourite.
Severn Trent's water, which covers Birmingham, Derbyshire, Gloucestershire, Nottingham, Leicester and parts of mid-Wales, was described by Michelin-starred chef Tom Aikens as being “very fresh with a clean taste". While Annabel’s head of wines Richard Rotti described it as, “beautifully pure, a mountain stream of freshness.”
One sample of a leading brand bottled water was also included in the test. This was described as "not natural", by Rotti and "good middle of the road pond water," by Adam Byatt, head chef at Clapham's Trinity restaurant.
Although it's worth noting that the tasting competition was set up to celebrate the launch of a new initiative from the environmental group Green Thing. The Drink Tap campaign will encourage people to stop drinking bottled water and switch to tap water during August.

"Severn Trent's water, which covers Birmingham, Derbyshire, Gloucestershire, Nottingham, Leicester and parts of mid-Wales,"
Oh, so Shropshire doesn't exist then? Thanks I love being non-existent.
Annie, Shropshire, England
When I moved from Newbury (Thames Water) to Rugby, (Severn Trent) I couldn't believe how much better the water tasted and that it no longer furs up my kettle etc. When I go back South to visit I cannot drink the water. It tastes awful. Maybe I shouldn't complain about the +6% on my bill this year?
Phil, Rugby, England
How do you become an "expert" in the taste of water???
I was always told an "ex" is a has been and and "spurt" is a drip under pressure. Apt!
Colin, Wokingham, UK
Yorkshire water ? pleasant tasting? I can still remember how stale and chemically the water from my grans tap tasted, but i suppose coming from the Gloustershire/ Wiltshire border I'v been spoilt.
London water though is the foulest thing i'v ever tasted!
Meg, Swidon,
Manchester's water (United Utilities) is undrinkable. Especially at room temperature. I used to buy cheap bottled water just to drink at home when I lived there.
Amy Allen, London,
The "Your Say " comments about this article demonstrate that the public realise that tap water quality is due to pollution. A basic need of life is pure uncontaminated water. We are poisoning ourselves with our own wastes. Governments are to blame for allowing habitation above storage dams
Jim Wills, Brisbane, Australia
Mine's Severn-Trent. It stinks of chlorine so I have to filter it or buy bottled water. It depends where you live within the region.
Sean, Droitwich,
It may taste alright but like a lot of other water it is poisoned with fluoride.
Phred, Chesterfield, UK
Is it any wonder that most people are always sick. They are drinking chlorinated, oestrogen contaminated, acidic water. They are then eating processed, chemically 'E' ridden foods which are acidic in nature. They pop pills which are acidic.
Louis, Liverpool, UK
Today's "water" comes in many different forms, with most of it ranging from poor to just OK in QUALITY. If youre looking to drink the BEST water, it must meet the following criteria for your body to benefit from the power of water:
1. Purity
2. pH
3. Mineral Content
4. Oxygen
Callum, Liverpool, UK
Jack
You're talking about places north of Watford and west of yer Chiswick .Narmean !
Giuliano, London, UK
Severn Trent supplies water from several sources. One of them is Cotswold spring water. I wonder which variety was offered for the tasting.
Alan Murphy, Cheltenham, UK
The taste test is only one method to determine the quality of tap water. The level of disolved toxins in the water should be listed as a guide to tap water appeal.
Jim Wills, Brisbane, Australia
I grew up drinking water unchlorinated and fresh off the Welsh mountains - it's unbeaten in my book!
Sadly as the bacteria count wasn't actually zero, they later built a chlorination plant :(
Sam, N Wales,
More to the point, which area has the lowest level of intoxicating oestrogen in it? When will this cause of infertility etc etc be taken seriously by the political elite.
Simon, York, England
The water in this region of Lancashire supplied by United Utilities is virtually undrinkable.
I just wish I could offset my weekly water bill for tea/coffee making could be offset against my water bill from a company that supplies a commodity that is patently not fit for purpose.
brian bunting, Chorley, United Kingdom
Yorkshire Water, A friendly water!!!
What does it do, shake your hand before you drink it. For goodness sake anyone could write this rubbish.
polly, newcastle,
Jack Ohakune, what the heck are you on about??!! Am i missing somthing or are you?
Chris, Yorks,
Jack, the article is looking at the different water companies in the UK, not the different regions - Scotland only has one water company, that is why it only gets one entry. Do your research before you criticise!
Rebecca, London,
Shame you didn't try out Tayside / Perthshire water. People visiting us in Dundee from all over the world have commented favourably on the quality of the tap water.
One of my wife's main objections for moving to Brighton - where I have moved recently for work reasons - is that the tea tastes awful!
Somnath Mukhopadhyay, Brighton, United Kingdom
South-West waqter smells of chlorine. Not drinkable.
alf parelli, London, UK
Nedza in London, Wales actually has two Water Companies in the North Wales area, Dwr Cymru and Dee Valley Water.
It all tastes of chlorine anyway!
Patricia, Rossett, North Wales
A coastal smell? Sewage perhaps?
Farrukh, Woking,
Scots and Welshmen - Nip down to your local HMV Megastore and change the bl**dy record.
James, Monteria, Colombia
I was initially confused by the concept of "middle-of-the road pond water" - then thought that with the size of the potholes in the roads around here that this is quite a reasonable description .. . .. and incidentally I would not drink our tap water without boiling it!
Geoff, Basingstoke,
Three Valleys Water doesn't feature on the list because it's unpalatable. Since moving to Hertfordshire I've been drinking more fruit juice and tea. Much better
Elise, Hatfield, UK
Jack - pipe down in the colonies.
John, Wimbledon, UK
I would like to know where Three Valleys Water came in this list since my relocation from Hampshire to Hertfordshire I can no longer drink tap water.
Nicola, Hertfordshire,
Jack , which alternative suppliers in these regions should have been looked at exactly ?
Benzo, Nr Chelmsford,
Jack - Wales and Scotland both only have one water authority. This test related in the main to water authorities rather than geo/political boundaries.
Maybe you should take that large chip on your shoulder over to the political pages?
Nedza, London, UK
It confirmed what a lot of us residents suspected down here - Wessex Water's water is chlorine ridden and unpalatable.
Rose, Bath, UK
I didn't realise Scotland and Wales were single regions of Britain. Perhaps they're just regions of England? If they couldn't be bothered acknowledging the differences and varieties in Scotland and Wales then just admit that and say England not Britain.
