Joint winner: Dandelion & Burdock, Sowerby Bridge
(01422 316000; www.dandelionandburdock.uk.com)
It’s certainly not grim up north for vegetarians with Dandelion & Burdock flying the flag for veggie cooking in the heart of West Yorkshire. D&B is completely vegan, but the food is promoted in such a subtle way that you may not notice the absence of dairy, let alone meat. A beautiful setting by the Manchester-Rochdale canal, perfectly balanced dishes, (including herb pate and walnut bread, pea and wild mushroom risotto and dairy-free cheesecake), and a visionary approach to marketing make this joint winner of the Vegetarian Society Awards stand out.
Joint winner: The Waiting Room, Stockton on Tees
(01642 780465; www.the-waiting-room.co.uk)
You won’t miss a traditional pie and pea supper at The Waiting Room. Autumn's menu boasts aubergine cannelloni, pumpkin, pea and parmesan risotto, with butternut squash and Yorkshire Blue cheesecake for dessert. A relaxed atmosphere and ‘unbelievably delicious’ food made The Waiting Room a worthy joint winner. This popular veggie restaurant was packed on a Wednesday night, so make sure you book early, or you will be kept waiting.
The Red Lion, Suffolk
(01473 657799; www.theveggieredlion.co.uk)
Winner of our Best Pub Award, The Red Lion in Great Bricett is East Anglia's first and only exclusively vegetarian pub. Our mystery diners gave top marks across the board for presentation, taste, texture, service – well pretty much everything! A mix of traditional meals such as Stilton, vegetable and chestnut cobbler, and international dishes such as African sweet potato stew, ensure that there’s something for every taste at the Red Lion.
Canteen, Cardiff
(02920 454999; www.canteenoncliftonstreet.com)
Canteen gained some mixed reviews, but our diners enjoyed their food more with every course, with a slightly disappointing starter of mushroom ravioli, eclipsed by a tasty and original caramel cheesecake. Mains include vegetable goulasch with wild rice and beetroot in salsa verde, and braised tofu with vegetable green curry and fragrant rice. Happy and knowledgeable staff add to the Canteen experience.

Demuths, Bath
(01225 446059; www.demuths.co.uk)
A regular feature on almost every award shortlist, Demuths did not disappoint with an eclectic range of beautifully presented and expertly cooked dishes. Our diners raved about the smoky squash scrunchies, Middle eastern mezze and Pistachio baklava. Other offerings include the shitake tofu cabbage roll and root vegetable gratin. Demuths can be on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for – great quality food and service.

Really good to see a list of good veggie places. I would suggest David Bann's in Edinburgh which is on the same street as Black Bo's. Both are good but for different reasons. Is there anything in Hampshire as that is where I am stuck now?
Aelx, Southampton, UK
You have missed Fellinis in Ambleside. I had a wonderful meal there last week on holiday. Service and ambiance of the restaurant was great. Send a critic to check it out.
Sher Kent, Winchester, England
Woodlands in London by far the best....
joe, london, united Kingdom
The Piano in York is amazing for cheap veggie food. It is all vegan and wheat free, and really really tastey, even for meat eaters!
Emily, York,
Woodlands in London and Terre a Terre in Brighton are both excellent.
Adam, High Wycombe,
I was shocked that The Rainbow Cafe in Cambridge wasn't listed! Great food including a good vegan selection, in a prime location, at a reasonable price...
Jen Johnson, Cambridge,
WILLOW - Totnes. The best vegetarian restaurant in Devon in my opinion, earnestly simple and cheap and yet always excellent quality and value. It is the best restaurant I have ever eaten in. I now travel from Cornwall to go there and keep ging back.
Jane Clark, Liskeard, UK
I've always had excellent service at Terre a Terre! Certainly in a completely different league to the George. Terre a Terre is just incredible food; so innovative and exciting! Cannot recommend their Tapas for 2 highly enough. Food for Friends is also brilliant; lovely, lovely food!
Nicola, Brighton,
The Egg Cafe in Liverpool city centre has been around for years and is fantastic value. Huge helpings of homemade grub, bring your own wine and great relaxed atmosphere...why isn't it mentioned?!
Jenny, Liverpool,
Anyone who loves veggie and indian food, should try Chutneys Veggie Indian in Drummond St, it's great the buffet lunch is really great value and their fresh chutneys are to die for, also the menu in the evening is inventive. Just go and try fab food and cheap.
Hilary Adamson, Nice, France
You should have mentioned Cafe Maitreya in Bristol. Gourmet food of the highest quality in a great atmosphere.
Phil Baldwin, Kilgetty, Wales
Terre a Terre and Food for Friends in Brighton both deserve a mention. Wasn't as impressed with Green's (Manchester) puddings but the veggie black pudding stew was lush. The Warehouse Cafe in Brum is good too. For fast food try the falafel king in Bristol waterfront.
Steve, Chandler's Ford, UK
A vegan cafe bar in Glasgow may seem like a tall order but The 78 has two sister vegan cafe bars, Stereo (just outside Central Station) and Mono (King Street) which also hosts one of the best C86-style indie record shops in Britain, Monorail Music. Mono and Stereo have some pretty decent gigs on too
Alan, Dublin,
Greens in Manchester is head and shoulders above anywhere else, great service and good value too ! Cant beleive its been missed from the list.
Jayne, barrow,
Cafe Maitreya in Easton, Bristol. Cordon Vert food. Fabulous, delicious, creative and inventive. Casual and very friendly atmosphere. Caters for all kinds of diets (vegan, gluten free etc).
linda chetwynd, bristol,
Hitchcock's in Hull. Unbeatable. First to book chooses the theme. Great.
pete m, HULL, UK
I agree with Katie. Greens in manchester is great. Always worth a trip. the eight day on oxford road is great for lunch. In London, Chennai Dosa in Wembley, or all of drummond st near Euston for south indian/Thai. There's a great place in tooting as well?
ronan, ipswich, suffolk
Hansa's, on North Street, Leeds is the finest restaurant anywhere (and I'm a carnivore) so even more impressive given that it's entirely vegetarian. The Sunday lunchtime buffets are outstanding for both taste and value.
Dave, Suffolk,
Two great places that have not been included on this list:
Woodys Cafe in Apsley, Hertfordshire.
Highlights: their cakes, smoothies and thin based pizzas.
The Warehouse Cafe in Digbeth, Birmingham.
Highlights: the specials menu is always changing. LOADS of vegan options. Really affordable too.
Alice, Birmingham, England
If you don't want to go out - or haven't got a good veggie restaurant near you (try La Lune in Glastonbury if you are Somerset-bound), then have a look at www.withykitchen.com. it's a husband/wife team who make delicious veggie and vegan meals in a totally meat-free kitchen. special Christmas menu
Rosie, Wells,
Black Bo's in Edinburgh is alway fab and really unusal food too. Highly recommend it better than the 'posh' veggie restaurant in Edinburgh. Susies Wholefood Diner for lunch/tea near Edinburgh Uni again lovely food and great atmoshpere and choices.
Jen, Edinburgh,
HUH?! How did Cafe Maitreya in Bristol not make the list. An unbelivable oversight. Send a critic there soon.
Nick, Bristol, UK
I agree with Becky about the George being VASTLY inferior to Terre a Terre in Brighton, but having eaten at the latter 3 or 4 times in the past couple of years, the service has been great and you get what you pay for, some of the best vegetarian food in the country (or world).
David Jones, Hurstpierpoint, UK
InSpiral Lounge gets my vote. The review above omits to mention that it also has a beautiful canal-side setting. The food is fantastic and the prices are ludicrously cheap.
John Bedson, Melbourne, Australia
Rainbow Cafe in Cambridge is delicious, fairly cheap, and have amazing desserts!!!
Kristen, Bristol, UK
What about Greens in Didsbury, Manchester? One of my favourite restaurants ever and totally veggie (they also have some vegan dishes too). I am always totally spoit for choice there.
Katie , Manchester, UK
The wholefood cafe in Machynlleth Powys provides a great range of organic veggie/vegan food and friendly service.
Sian, Machynlleth, Wales
Interested to see that The George beat Terre a Terre in Brighton to the list... The food at the George hasn't been the same since the kicthen staff changed earlier this year, but saying that, service at Terre a Terre, which can cost up to £40 per head, is appalling.
Becky, Brighton,
