The winner of the 21st national Fish & Chip Shop of the Year competition will be announced on January 22 at a ceremony hosted by the chef Simon Rimmer in London.
Last year, for the first time in the competition’s history, entrants were judged on their commitment to building a sustainable future for the industry. Points were given to shops according to their use of sustainable species and the measures they have in place to encourage customers to try something new.
According to the organisers Seafish, one in every £100 spent on food is in a fish and chip shop, equating to more than 276 million fish suppers sold every year from almost 10,500 shops.
Tell us about your favourite chippy in the comment box at the bottom of the page.

We are discussing fish and chips here . The awards don't say much about the taste of the product .
As it's been said in the blurb above . All we need to know is the highest awarded fish and chip shop , use sustainable products . mmmmm
jim, pontefract, England
Mark's spot on about The Magpie Cafe. The fish is fresh and delicate and the batter, usually just something I pull off to get to what's beneath, is delicious. I'll have to try the Quayside next time.
PS - I'm heartbroken that when I lived in St Andrews I never visited the Anstruther Fish Bar.!
Shannon, Sheffield, UK
Posh Fish in Headington, Oxford is somewhere I'd recommend. Giant portions of highest quality!! One small portion of fish n chips leaves 2 v contented people! Chris - there's now a second branch of the Fish and Chicken Inn in Ballymena, which they reviewed. Only noticed it last time I was home..
Lisa, Oxford,
Any list excluding the excellent fresh local cod or haddock & chips from Whitby at both The Quayside and The Magpie Cafe is totally flawed.
As a Yorkshire ex-pat one of the greatest sacrifices is not being able to get decent fish & chips without going "home" :(
Mark, Kettering, England
Quality Fish and Chip shop, in Fordington Green, Dorchester! Surely thats the best!
RP and LC, London,
Murgatroyds near Leeds Bradford airport deserves a mention.
Wonderful meals in there.
Ian, Thornaby,
I live less than a half a mile from Colemans in South Shields but prefer to travel to Whitby for the food in the Magpie Resturant. (At least once a week) Far superior in all aspects from quality to presentation and ambience to price.
Graham, South Shields, UK.
Steels in Grimsby!!!!!
THE best fish i've ever tasted , cosy environment, nice and cheap and when you think of a large fish, take a Steak plate (one of the big oval ones) the fish is bigger than the plate and the chips are incredible.
A must for anyone visiting in that area
Ollie, Nottingham,
You have not tasted fish and chips, till you have tried Tates at Boston, opposite Oldrids Dept. Store. If they served fish and chips in heaven, they would taste like Tates.....ps the mushy peas and tea are a must....
deo, boston, england
What about Harry's in Warrington?
Ab, London, United Kingdom
What about 'Mariners' in Penryn?
Richard Hopper, Penryn, UK
What about Ollie's in Herne Hill???
Brett Davies, Sydney,
The Broomhill friary does not do anywhere near the best fish and chips in the country. Steels in Cleethorpes all the way
Lottie Luxemburg, Sheffield,
I can't believe there isn't one Whitby fish and chip shop on this list! What's that all about?
Nina Swift, Whitby, UK
I'll second the Broomhill Friery in Broomhill, Sheffield - I'm a regular there -its not flashy or poncey, just great fish & chips
Luci, Sheffield,
Yes what about the Magpie in Whitby. Absolutely fantastic. Nothing like it anywhere. We travel from the Tyne once a week.
Great resturant menu as well as carryout. Great staff and cheerful friendly customers. Even queing 50 yards down the road is not a problem for the quality served.
Graham, Newcastle, UK
We visit Anstruther Fish & Chip Shop a few times a year , we drive over 100 miles to Anstruther and would never consider eating anywhere else when we are up there. We are never disappointed....even if we've waited up to an hour for our suppers! Well done to the owners, kudos well deserved.
Fiona Tamburrini, East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire
i was staggered not to find the Magpie at Whitby on your list . Their fish varieties sourced fresh from the dock 10 paces away are stunning, it just flakes creamily and melts in the mouth, best eaten from the wrapping sat looking at the sea! Watch out for seagulls!
Sue, Bradford, UK
If you're ever on Anglesey try the chippie in Maltraeth, near Newborough. They cook the fish by timer when you order and they taste sublime.
Andrew, Wrexham,
We ate at Merchants Fish bar in Bewdley for the first time. Sitting at one of the formica tables we had the best fish and chips we've ever tasted. Fabulous light crispy batter with succulent lemon sole underneath and crisp light chips - delicious. The service is amazingly friendly too.
Kim, Ludlow, Shropshire
Two other good ones. If in Cornwall, find the village of St Dennis, and ask a local where the chippy is. The best ones are always hidden!
If in Worthing, try Chipwick, down on the seafront. Fish excellent, chips pretty good.
None as good as Bradshaws, Newport Rd, Aldershot. Lovely Charlie!
Ian, Southampton,
Bradshaws, Newport Road, Aldershot. Probably the strangest little chip shop left on the planet. Just as you would imagine Harry Ramsden started. Family business, handed down from father to son.
BEST FISH AND CHIPS THAT I HAVE EVER TASTED.
Open Tue to Fri 5-9,but dont go Xmas to April 5th.Shut!
Ian, Southampton,
The Cove in Otley West Yorkshire serve fish and chips that are to die for.
I am never able to finish a portion of fish and chips normally but the fish and chips from there just melt in your mouth. Very welcoming staff too which is very nice.
If you go once, you'll go again.
J Smoothy, Leeds, UK
The Anstruther fish bar had a couple of sub-standard years but the meal I had there three weeks ago surpassed any fish and chips I have ever eaten, also they are cheaper than many highstreet fish and chip shops with a slap-up serving coming in at c.a. £4.50
James, St.Andrews, Fife
The best fish and chips are in Yorkshire, and Castleford in particular. There are over half a dozen shops, but the best is Asquiths on Beancroft road. The fish is the tastiest, and the portions are very generous. Long live this Cas institution!
Phil, Pontefract, England
Papa's in Weston-Super-Mare by far the best fish and chips with excellent staff.
Mike Jones, Weston-Super-Mare,
Try the 'Great British Eatery' in Birmingham - opened Summer 2008 and sell chips cooked in beef dripping, yummy!!
By FAR the best in the Midlands and the fish is delivered fresh everyday, much better that the defrosted, soggy types usually cooked in Brum!!
Sally, Birmingham,
It's many years since my family queued in the rain outside the fish and chip shop at Aldeburgh. Despite the weather, a fireworks display took place on one of the cliffs. The best such grub has always been by the sea and Aldeburgh supreme amongst those.
Jeff, London,
A van that goes through the villages of Marsworth, Pitstone etc in Bucks called "Figgis Fryer". The Fish and Chips are incredible. have not been there for 5 yrs mind as overseas but I rember a lady who would take all the orders from a 25 long queue all in her head, she was incredible!
Ed, Toowoomba, Australia
Is Harry Ramsden's still going strong outside Leeds ??
Timothy, Houston, Texas
Sea Shells, monkseaton, tyne&wear. Fantastic, perfect everytime. Staff are great. Customers come from miles around & queue outside the shop in snow, wind and rain for their fish fix. Keep up the good work.
Duncan, Whitley Bay, Tyne & Wear
I have had the pleasure of eating fish and chips from the Magpie in Whitby and the Townhead Cafe in Biggar but the Anstruther Fish Bar is where my wife wanted to be taken as a birthday treat when she could have had her pick of Edinburgh's finest restaurants, it is that good!
John, Amman, Jordan
I agree that the Anstruther chippy should win (the deep fried monkfish was sublime) but L'Aquilla Bianca in Stockbridge, Edinburgh should also get a mention. I took my step sister and there and she liked it so much they have tried to replicate the fish and chips at her restaurant in Tulsa!
Craig Johnston, Chicago, USA
Greasy Ken's in Wolsingham, Co Durham. ( don't think it's officially called Greasy Ken's but is known by that that title)
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
Wanny, Macclesfield, UK
The Ansthruther fish bar should win by a mile. The most glorious fish and chips I have ever tasted.
Ann, Manchester, UK
Nashes fish and chips, Harrogate Road, Leeds without a doubt the finest in the country surpass anything in Whitby by a long way.
James H, leeds, england
"Scooby Snax offers the perfect location to stop for a hearty plate of fish and chips and a stroll along the beach"
As far as i know, there isnt a beach in colchester? Unless ive missed it the several times ive been there.
Rob Leaper, southend, UK
I'd happily tell you about the worst I've been to, but don't expect me tell you the best, they'll put the prices up ! (anyway, it's not one of the above).
Howard, London, UK
1. Anstruther Fish Bar & Restaurant (Fife)
I have fantastic memories of this place. Great to see great food being recognised. I know the current owners bought this wee gem only a few years ago, Brilliant to see standards haven't slipped!
Louisa , Dundee, United Kingdom
The shop 'round the corner won something like this a while ago, but I honestly can't tell the difference to other shops. It's just soggy chips and tasteless fish, like everywhere else.
Ross, Lancaster, UK
I know I'm biased, but Two Steps on Sharrowval Road in Sheffield is fantastic too!!
Michael Nares, Sheffield,
Farrow's fish and chips in Totterdown, Bristol. Top food, friendly staff.
Graham, Bristol,
The 'Codfather' in Clapham. Sometimes, on the wya home, I get off one tube stop early just to go there.
Stephen, London,
The fish and chip van on the quayside of Tobermory harbour on the Isle of Mull is stunning. Not only are the fish and chips fantastic, but try the scallops and chips, bit pricier but absolutely worth it. Think it was another of Rick Stein's recommendations.
Sian , Hull, UK
Im glad to see the Magpie Cafe hasn't made the list. I spend long enough queing for britains finest fish and chips as it is.
Paddy Fisher, Barnsley, England
The Broomhill Fryery in Sheffield is the best in my opinion, the magpie in Whitby is a close 2nd. I am a Southerner (from Winchester in Hampshire and never heard of the plaice) andf recently moved up north and the fish and chips are a different class in Yorkshire I hqave to say.
Scott Bascombe, Leeds, UK
How about any of the fish and chips shops on North Shields Quayside.. fresh fish .. straight off the boats .. cooked by the wives of the husbands who caught the fish .. absolutely fantastic
marke, houston, texas
You'll find it hard to beat the fish & chips from Whitby! The Quayside and The Magpie Cafe are delectable.
Lorna, Burton, Staffordshire, UK
Any table of the 'Top 10 Fish and Chip Shops' that does not feature the Magpie Cafe in Whitby is not worth the paper it is printed on!
John Tranmer, Harrogate, UK
The Brown Room in Filey is great. My family have been going there for donkeys years.
Nicola, Sheffield,
I visited Colmans of South Shields yesterday and have to say the fish and chips were outstanding as they have been every time i've visited them. I agree that the Magpie in Whitby is also of very high quality, but i have found them to be a little hit and miss at times.
Chris
Chris Carr, Sunderland, England
are you telling me not one of the best 10 are in London - dissapointing
claire, London, UK
The Magpie Cafe does deserve a mention - but what about Steels in Cleethorpes? Surely the number one place for any real fish and chip expert. The Mermaid in Warrington, just off the M62 is better than all the other piffle that has been mentioned as well.
Paul Taylor, Nottingham, England
Master Fryer!!!
Number 1 for sure
Shahzad , Brighton,
Nowhere beats the north-east of Scotland for a consistently high standard of fish and chips. Anywhere from Banff to Arbroath you will be hard pressed to find a bad supper. They land a lot of white fish and grow good potatoes up here. But to pick one, I will nominate Mike's in Torry, Aberdeen.
Gordono, Aberdeen, Scotland
It's the Aldeburgh Fish shop, but just up the coast near un-trendy Lowestoft, is the Pakefield-Plaice, which runs it very close.
paul honeker, halesworth, suffolk
Bretts in Headingley and the Fryer's Delight in London should be there. And I agree with the Magpie in Whitby.
Dom, London,
The Fish & Chicken Inn has been open since I was a boy (some time ago).
What about "For Cod and Ulster" in East Belfast?
Chris, Belfast, N I
No candidates from Yorkshire, I challenge anyone to find any better than the Magpie in Whitby, why not consult Mr Gill, he gave it 5 stars, superb
Tom, Leeds, Yorkshire
What, no Whitby? At the least, the Magpie should be listed, surely?
Kris, London, UK
The Master Fryer, Pound Hill, Crawley: That's the daddy.
Rhys, Brighton,
You missed out McDemott's in Croydon. Restaurant and takeaway.
Carol, London, UK
Where's the Magpie in Whitby? I drove 300 miles to taste their Fish and Chips and it was well worth the journey!
Louise M, London, England
Papas in Rochester Kent is fab too - had large haddock, chips and mushy peas last Saturday ... delicious!
Nick, Chatham, Engerland
The 'Magpie Cafe' in Whitby has to be one of the finest in the country.
Rick Stein ended his Seafood Oddysey in there, explaining (not word for word) "I have travelled the continents to explore and find the best seafood dish, and here it is".
Graham Murray, Guisborough, England
Bryans in Headingley, Leeds is number one for me!
Martin, Brighton, England
No candidates from Yorkshire? The awards are a waste of time.
Steffy, Halifax,
Cosy Fish Bar in White Cross Street, London.
Cod Damn this plaice is good. Every Friday our department goes here and they never disappoint. They know our order,we're eating within 5 mins of sitting down and its so tasty that one of our team still ate hers after she put sugar instead of salt on it
Philip, Petersfield,
They all sound a bit poncey to me!
Tom, London,
The Golden Plaice on Weybridge high street is excellent.
Arnold Ward, Weybridge, Surrey, UK
Captain Cod's in Kidderminster is definitely one of the best in the country!
Omaira, Kidderminster,
Nonsense.
You've missed out Aldeburgh's Fish and Chip restaurant in Suffolk. I forget it's name, but it's the blue one on the corner.
I've worked hard to find a better one (!) but have never succeeded.
Dominic, Bandar, Brunei
Thank You Esther Beddar!
Harvey, amsterdam, nederland
You missed out Beddars Fish & Chips, in Birmingham! Best around, its won awards too!
Esther, Birmingham, West Midlands
