RESTAURANTS AND CAFES
ARTISAN CAFE
296 Marine Road, Central Morecambe, Lancashire, LA4 5BY (01524 417954)
The work of local artists adorn the walls of this seafront daytime café that opened in 2004. As followers of the Slow Food movement they insist on cooking all the food freshly to order, so expect a wait at peak periods. But it's worth it. Make sure you check out the specials' board, too.
THE CAFE
4 Terrace Road,Tideswell, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 8NA (01298 77480)
Hannah Critchlow started a tiny modern café in Buxton two years ago. She was particularly driven by the desire to source meat and fish locally from well known suppliers. Her bistro-style food ranges from black pudding with Staffordshire oatcakes to lamb curry, Spanish Tortilla, frittatas and salads.

Foragers in Carnforth, Lancashire is a fantastic butcher shop. They specialize in rare-breed, free-range pork from their own herd, as well as local lamb and beef.
One of the things I love abut Britain is the availability of local sources for meat, cheese, and produce. These types of shops deserve your support.

I'd like to mention a few others for when the list is revised:
Out of the Blue fish shop come cafe in Chorlton, Manchester - they serve oysters ready to eat!
Howarths butchers in Flixton, Manchester with fabulous sausages - better than Holly tree farm in my book if perhaps not with the same publicity machine.
Also worth a mention as a really strong local retailer, which after all is half the point - diverting attention from mass produced mas market supermarket offerings, is Reserve Wine shop in West Didsbury. It's good to find shops that don't just stock Penfolds, Gallo and Blossom hill...
