LOCAL PRODUCE SPECIALIST RESTAURANTS, CAFES AND DELIS
ACORN HOUSE
69 Swinton Street, London WC1X
(020-7812 1842; www.acornhouserestaurant.co.uk)
Times' food critic, Giles Coren called Acorn House "the most important restaurant to open in London in the past 200 years". Conceived by restaurant manager Jamie Grainger-Smith and head chef Arthur Potts, it is completely environmentally sustainable. The interior is cool and modern with uncovered tables and linen napkins. Food is café style during the day providing local office workers with a welcome alternative. By night, exotic dishes like pappardelle of wild venison, juniper, nutmeg and parmesan and chargrilled butterfly of mackerel fillet with cardamom and horseradish mean diners can indulge and save the planet at the same time.
CANTEEN
2 Crispin Place, Spitalfields, E1; and below the Royal Festival Hall SE1
(0845 686 1122; www.canteen.co.uk)
A buzzing, sleekly decorated 21st-century restaurant but with all the good things about the food of England's past. Welsh rarebit, potted duck and hot buttered Arbroath smokies are some of the old favourites that grace the menu. The star turn is a rib-eye of Charolais-Limousin from Sussex served with pale, barnyardy gravy, potatoes roasted in duck fat and exemplary Yorkshire pudding. Those with the inclination can sate themselves on a huge breakfast and lunch for £30.90.
DAYLESFORD ORGANIC
30, Pimlico Road, Pimlico, SW1W 8LG
(0207 730 2943; www.daylesfordorganic.com)
The Gloucestershire super farm shop came to the capital in 2007 with a white marble-clad restaurant/deli selling in-house products such as milk, cheese and bread made on site from Daylesford grain. There's a butcher (selling organic venison), a delicatessen and a seasonal menu of tasty treats to eat in.
