Green Onions is the brain-child of a self-proclaimed dynamic duo in their thirties looking to serve up “non-pretentious, home-cooked seasonal food.” They arrange dinners, “food raves” and secret picnics and describe themselves as “just two kids from Yorkshire cooking food that we like or think other people will like - with a few laughs thrown in.” Expect locally picked greens from friends’ allotments when possible, the likes of ham and parsley jelly, followed by braised rabbit with summer vegetables and jersey potatoes, washed down with a rhubarb prosecco.

At a more shabby than chic fourth-floor flat in the heart of Brixton's pulsating Electric Avenue, Rosie and Ellie are delightful hosts for a four-course BYO feast that uses seasonal ingredients. Hand-picked flowers on the table, waitresses in summer dresses, and John Lee Hooker on the iPod set the scene in a room laid out for about 15 diners (mostly in their 20s and 30s) on tables for two, three and four. On the hand-written menu: chilled beetroot soup with sour cream and dill; warm fennel, olive and feta salad; spiced shoulder of Smithfield lamb with tabbouleh and minted yoghurt and extra helpings of home-made mango and rosewater and raspberry and cassis sorbets - all delicious. When I visited, the evening was rounded off with neat espressos and an outing for The Rooftops, a charming harmonic quartet. Suggested donation is £20, left discreetly in an old-fashioned tobacco tin. Terrific. (Nick Wyke)

Every Wednesday Jupiter serves up vegetarian Japanese fusion-style food to mainly young, media types. At £15-£20 for six courses, it’s one of the cheapest underground food venues around and yet one of the most refined, with each dish beautifully presented. If you’re lucky, Jupiter, a musician, might even play something for you.

A recent Italian-inspired menu included English tomato gazpacho soup for starters, followed by a salad of British strawberries, mozzarella, prosciutto, wild rocket, thyme and balsamic reduction. A pan-roasted fillet of sea bass teamed with scallops and beetroot salsa made up the main, followed by a Pimm's sorbet, lemon pannacotta and Monmouth coffee with macaroons.
