Win a trip to the Ice Hotel in Lapland
Serves 6-8
A truly effortless starter, this can be put together in a matter of minutes.
The most important thing to remember when making the pâté is not to overwork
the fish or it’ll turn to mush. Keep the texture rustic and fold through the
mackerel flakes as a last step.
400g smoked mackerel fillets
250ml crème fraîche
2-3 tbsp grated horseradish
Zest and juice of half a lemon
Freshly ground black pepper
1 tbsp chopped dill
1 Peel off the skin from the smoked mackerel and break the flesh into flakes,
discarding any large bones.
2. In a bowl, combine the crème fraîche, grated horseradish, lemon juice and
black pepper according to taste. Carefully fold in the mackerel flakes and
dill, then spoon into individual serving bowls or ramekins. Cover with
clingfilm and chill for 2 hours before serving.

Louise, go to an Indian green grocers and ask for Muli, or sometimes it is known as white radish.
It's much preferable to the sauce as it doesn't have that overpowering, vinegary taste.
Wash and peel the horesradish before grating.
Good luck next time!
Peter, London,
I did this last christmas and it was an absolute hit even my four year old adored it and she's usually fussy. it is very very easy to make. However, I had to use horseradish sauce as none of the supermarkets stocked horseradish - any suggestions? anyway, I've made it several times since and will do it again this christmas, so at least I know the starter will be good!
