2008 Wits End Chardonnay, McLaren Vale, Australia, Co-op, down to £4.99 until tomorrow. Last chance to snap up a good, ordinary £4.99 Aussie duo for the summer holidays, and this zesty, celery and citrus-scented superior regional chardonnay from McLaren Vale gets my vote.

2006 Wits End Cabernet-Shiraz, McLaren Vale, Australia, Co-op, down to £4.99 until tomorrow. McLaren Vale shiraz is as good as it gets – this classic Aussie blend displays some surprisingly classy and classic curranty fruit with an attractive, burnt, earthy, barbecue-food suitable finish.

2007 Finest Fiano, Cantine Settesoli, Sicily, Tesco, £6.13. Fiano, an ancient, somewhat obscure grape variety from Campania, also does well further south in Sicily, and now that Tesco has got behind it, this is one of the Finest range’s biggest sellers. Miss this grapey, floral white, topped up with viognier, and you will miss out.

2006 Finest Sonoma Chardonnay, California, Tesco, £8.19. Too many California chardonnays are charmless, over-oaked, overly alcoholic whites – not this gentle, fragrant, appley ’06 though, from a prime spot, Sonoma, and complete with a seductive nutty finish, due to the majority aged for six months in oak barrels.

2006 Nolan Cabernet Sauvignon, Wrattonbully, South Australia, Berry Bros & Rudd (01256 340182), £12.50. A voluptuous Aussie cabernet, from a top limestone soil-rich area near Coonawarra, with lots of fat, ripe, spicy, velvety, briary fruit that delivers elegance and attitude.

2006 Hewitson Baby Bush Mourvèdre, Barossa Valley, South Australia, Berry Bros & Rudd, £16.25. Like the previous red, this impressive Aussie offering makes delicious upmarket barbecue fodder and heaves with all sorts of sweet, ripe, hefty, faintly burnt black fruit flavours.
