2006 Veo Chardonnay Errázuriz Ovalle, Chile, Tesco, down £1 to £2.99 until March 27. Good, ordinary, easy-swigging £2.99ers still exist even if the hunt gets harder every year so drink deep of this lively, ripe, appley, food-suitable, 13 per cent alcohol Chilean chardonnay while you can.
2006 Veo Cabernet-Merlot, Errázuriz Ovalle, Chile, Tesco, down £1 to £2.99 until March 27. Sweet, simple, gluggable juicy red, the partner to the Veo white (above), with lots of ripe, squishy, Ribena-style fruit. A cheap and thoroughly agreeable New World take on the Bordeaux original
2005 Domaine Sainte Rose, La Garrigue, France, Majestic, £6.99, or buy two for £5.59 each until April 30. Charles and Ruth Simpson have made a success of their move to the Midi as this Sainte Rose duo proves: this velvety red, a blend of syrah and grenache, is thick with full, ripe herby, peppery fruit
2005 Domaine Sainte Rose Le Vent du Nord, France, Majestic, £6.99, or buy two for £5.59 each until April 30. The Rhône is roussanne's home, where its heavy fruit and flavour can overwhelm, but further south in the Midi and lightened with chardonnay, the result is enticing, exotic peach and waxy fruit
2004 Henschke Henry's Seven, Barossa, Australia, Waitrose, down £3 to £11.99 until March 25. Henschke is one of Australia's great wine families, and this decidedly alcoholic 15 per cent red, made primarily of shiraz and grenache, offers plenty of bright, ripe, spicy, perfumed, faintly rustic fruit
2006 Danie de Wet, Earth and Sky Chardonnay, Robertson, South Africa, Waitrose, down £1.40 to £5.59 until March 25. Danie de Wet's Breede River Valley vines have produced an impressive run from the chardonnay grape, including this rich, zesty, earthy, punchy, 14.5 per cent alcohol 2006.

There is so much dross pushed out at the lower prices that we need Jane more than ever to guide us to the decent purchases.

I always look forward to reading this column. However, something about it puzzles me on a regular basis. It strikes me as a little strange that so many £2.99 wines are profiled as Star Buys.
Assuming someone goes to the trouble of reading a wine column and follows it up with a purchase or two, is it not likely that their budget will stretch beyond the cheapest wines out there?
Personally, I would favour two sub £6 wines, two sub £12 wines and two wines that deserve to be considered, regardless of their high/low price.
Regards,
Eddie Layre, Glasgow,
