2006 Bourgogne Blanc, Labouré-Roi, France, Somerfield, £5.99 until Tuesday.
Not the best white burgundy I have ever tasted, but this young, light, lively,
green apple-scented chardonnay that could come from grapes grown anywhere in
the region, delivers a good £6 worth of flavour.
2006 Vieux Remparts Lussac St Emilion, France, Somerfield, down to £5.99
until Tuesday.
Still time to scoop up this cut-price Top 100 winner from Bordeaux’s famous St
Emilion commune. Somerfield has both the 2005 vintage and the almost as
impressive, jolly, juicy 2006, so take your pick.
2006 Brachetto Rovero, Piemonte, Italy, Adnams (01502 727222), £9.50.
Adnams does a good line in weird and wacky wines, alongside the classics,
and this is one of them: a lively, sweet, rose-scented and raspberry
palated, slightly fizzy red that goes down wonderfully well, chilled with a
bowl of summer berries.
2006 Saint Amour, Domaine Le Carjot, Jean-Louis Adoir, France, Adnams,
£8.99.
Summer is beaujolais season as the wine works as well chilled on hot days
as it does at room temperature on cold ones. So tuck into Adnams’ gorgeous,
vibrant, spicy, squashy red fruits-stashed St Amour.
2003 Taste the Difference Barolo, Italy, Sainsbury’s, £12.99.
Almost all the supermarkets have a fancy Barolo, and this superior
Sainsbury’s version from Ascheri delivers lots of fine, dry, leathery spice
and an elegant, tarry finish. Perfect with a plate of spicy meats.
2003 Château Clémont-Pichon, Haut Médoc, Bordeaux, France, Sainsbury’s,
£14.99.
Supermarkets can be a good source of keenly priced clarets, and this 2005 cru
bourgeois, a mix of cabernet sauvignon and merlot, topped up with cabernet
franc, and oozing fat, ripe fruit, is Sainsbury’s best bet.
