2006 Montagny Vieilles Vignes, Blason de Bourgogne, France, Somerfield, £5.99 until March 25. Are ‘06 white burgundies the bee’s knees? Judge for yourself with this floral, apple and citrus-laden white. It has the sort of zesty, elegant, yet punchy fruit you’d expect from a baby burgundy.

2001 Almena Real Rioja Reserva, Viñedos de Labarta, Spain, Somerfield, £4.99 until March 25. 2001 was a top rioja vintage, so tuck into this terrific red reserva, aged for 18 months in French and American oak, and blessed with smoky, spicy, sandalwood-scented fruit.

2005 Bourgogne Chardonnay, Domaine Jomain, France, Majestic Wine Warehouses, £7.99. Stock up early for Easter at Majestic with this glorious white burgundy from the great 2005 vintage, whose fine, ripe, nutty, creamy, chardonnay fruit punches above its weight and will win it many fans.

2003 Château la Rose des Tuileries, Lalande de Pomerol, France, Majestic, £9.99, or buy two for £7.99 each until April 7. Scoop up this fine right-bank claret with its floral perfume and seductive, ripe, spicy, plummy, leathery fruit before the price goes back up next month.

2003 Clos du Papillon, Savennières, Baumard, France, Jeroboams (020-7235 1612), £13.75. Clos du P is one of the best Anjou estates. Its minerally savennières lives for ever and, because of 2003’s heat, is deliciously beefed up with an extra layer of fat, ripe, waxy, floral Loire fruit.

2006 Mount Edward Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand, Jeroboams, £21.50. Central Otago, way down in the South Island, is the perfect place for pinot noir, and this gorgeous, juicy, rose-scented edition is one of the best vintages I have tasted from this estate. Enjoy.
