2005 Fitou, Réserve Les Capitelles, France, Somerfield, down to £3.99 until May 6. The Mont Tauch co-operative can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned, and this brilliant blend of carignan and grenache from Southern France delivers oodles of fine, sweet, earthy, herby fruit.

2007 Cono Sur Reserva Pinot Noir, Casablanca Valley, Chile, Somerfield, down to £5.49 until May 6. Trade up to the Reserva level of Cono Sur’s popular blend and you will not be disappointed. This zippy, strawberry-stashed 2007 oozes classy and classic pinot-noir style.

2007 Taste the Difference Gavi, Araldica, Italy, Sainsbury’s, £6.99. Sainsbury’s Italians often punch above their weight, and this winning gavi made from 35-year-old Cortese vines from a leading producer has the sort of racy, elegant, apricot and lemon-licked pizazz that proves the point.

2006 Taste the Difference Primitivo del Salento, Cantine du Palme, Italy, Sainsbury’s, down £1.50 to £4.49 until April 29. The Cantine du Palme co-operative in the Salento region of Puglia produces deliciously ripe, sweet, creamy, blackberry-layered primitivos, just like this one.

2005 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru en Remilly, Henri Prudhon & Fils, France, Tanners (01743 234455), £14.50 or buy six for £13.77 each until April 30. This burgundy producer from a village between Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault has made one of his best yet: all ripe, toasty, hazelnut elegance.

2005 Quinta Vale D. Maria, Douro, Cristiano van Zeller, Portugal, tanners, £18.70 or buy six for £17.77 each until April 30. Another highlight of Tanners’ spring show was this amazing red: an old friend whose dreamy, fat, ripe, red-fruits palate shows just what the port-wine region is capable of.
