2006 Andrew Peace Limited Release Shiraz-Cabernet, South Eastern Australia, Co-op, down to £4.49 until tomorrow. Not as tasty as its chardonnay sister, but still oozing with jammy, briary 14 per cent alcohol spice that needs big food like beef carpaccio or a chicken liver salad to show at its best.

2007 Gnarly Petit Verdot-Shiraz Rosé, South Eastern Australia, Waitrose, £6.69. Terrific name. Within lies a wonderful ripe, sweet, perfumed peppery pink with a fine floral finish, made from a seductive combination of petit verdot from prime Langhorne Creek topped up with one-third Adelaide Hills shiraz.

2005 Bourgueil, Racines, Frédéric Mabileau, Waitrose, £11.99. Verdant, crunchy Loire reds such as this bold, inky ’05 with lots of vegetal fruit made from 40-year-old cabernet franc vines take time to appreciate. Order it on 0800 188881 as just six branches of Waitrose stock it, and serve chilled.

2004 Le Clos Jordanne Single Vineyard Pinot Noir, Niagara Peninsula, Canada, Liberty Wine (020-7720 5350), £25.49. It’s worth splashing out on this quirky joint-venture Canadian pinot noir made with help from Boisset in Burgundy – its rich, gamey, Marmite-like spice is almost burgundian.

2004 Solalto, Maremma Toscana, Fattoria Le Pupille, Italy, Liberty Wine, half bottle £16.49. Elisabetta Geppetti’s Solalto is a wonderfully unusual, traminer, sauvignon and semillon grape-based, peach, apricot and orange peel-stashed sticky from the southern Tuscan coast. Enjoy.
