Q I am 33 and generally fit. However, last winter, I had a cold that developed into a bad cough and chest congestion; weeks later I was diagnosed with pleurisy. Now my cough is bad again and my chest feels tight. I would like to improve the health of my lungs and stop coughing. I am looking for a natural approach including aromatherapy so as to avoid antibiotics.
Dawn Wilson, Preston
A In aromatherapy, the lungs are a significant route through which essential oils are absorbed. Inhalation is the fastest way of getting oils into the bloodstream, as the oils evaporate on contact with air and are carried into the body via the nose. Once in the lungs, the particles pass through the fine lining and enter the bloodstream, which transports them around the body. As dry air can make breathing more difficult, it is best to conduct steam inhalations of eucalyptus, pine, frankincense or tea-tree oils (£4.10-£12.25, from www.tisserand.com).
Frankincense can relieve tightness in the chest and deepen respiration rates; eucalyptus is arguably unmatched for its powerful action in treating lung infections, sinusitis and the common cold; pine is especially good where there are chills, fatigue or a profuse amount of clear or white mucus; and tea tree is helpful for general immune-system disorders.
Add a few drops of essential oil to a basin of hot water and inhale for seven minutes. Frankincense and tea tree work best alone, while pine and eucalyptus can be combined.
Q I have recently been diagnosed with sinusitis, which contributes to a sense of pressure and pain in my head. I also suffer from excess mucus. Please help.

A Pelargonium sidoides, a plant similar to geranium, which is indigenous to South Africa, is highly effective at treating respiratory infections and sinusitis. In a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial on patients suffering from acute maxillary sinusitis, those who were taking the placebo saw no significant change in their symptoms over a 21-day period. However, patients taking pelargonium saw an 80% progressive symptom relief over the same period. One tablet of MedicHerb Pelargonium (£8.99 for 30 tablets, from Boots) should be taken at the first sign of infection and then three times daily for up to 10 days. The old practice of inhaling steam from a basin of hot water has long been recognised for effectively treating sinus infections, by helping to relieve congestion and pressure. Add a few drops of Eucalyptus Globulus Organic Essential Oil (£4, from Neal’s Yard Remedies) to the water and breathe in the vapour deeply, keeping your eyes closed.
According to Eastern medicine, eating pungent food, or food flavoured with spices such as black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, ginger and cardamom, can help to dry up excess mucus, especially if this is clear or white. Garlic can also help to reduce the amount of mucus produced by the body. Dairy products should be avoided until symptoms have subsided, as they can increase congestion.
Q My son is due for a big operation. Could you please give me some advice on what he can take in preparation and suggest something to spray in hospital to help prevent MRSA?
Amanda Keast-Southall, Nottingham
A Germ-a Clenz is a spray that I would take with me should I be admitted to hospital (£6.95; www.oliveleaf.co.uk). It contains the herb oregano, a natural germ-killing agent, together with a blend of essential oils with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. This can be sprayed around you, but I put it on my clothes or a tissue to inhale when exposed to areas where infection is possible.
Silver has been used as a form of antibiotic for centuries to prevent infectious microorganisms from multiplying and spreading, so I would suggest Sovereign Silver Hydrosol (£12.84 for 60ml; www.savant-health.com), a spray that you can also take internally, which can help to prevent bacterial, viral or fungal infections.
I would also recommend that your son takes homeopathic arnica before and after his operation to help ease the stress of surgery. Arnica is renowned for its ability to promote the healing of damaged tissues and aid recovery from injury. He should suck three 30c-strength tablets the day before surgery and continue for three days afterwards, or until there is less pain and shock. Try Weleda’s organic Arnica 30 (£5.15 for 125 tablets; www.weleda.co.uk).
