A “global epidemic” of Alzheimer’s disease could take hold by 2050 with the number affected set to quadruple, experts predicted yesterday.
The number of people living with the condition, which is estimated at 26 million worldwide, will grow to more than 106 million by 2050, with about half of them needing high-level care, the researchers said. The Alzheimer’s Society said that about 1.7 million people will be living with the condition in the UK by 2050.
There are currently 700,000 people with dementia in the UK and 60,000 people die from it every year.
The research author Professor Ron Brookmeyer, from the Bloomberg School of Public Health in Maryland, told the International Conference on the Prevention of Dementia in Washington DC: “We face a looming global epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease as the world’s population ages.
“By 2050, one in 85 persons worldwide will have Alzheimer’s disease. However, if we can make even modest advances in preventing Alzheimer’s disease or delay its progression, we could have a huge global public health impact.”
Mr Brookmeyer said that the biggest rise in the number of cases would occur in Asia where currently 48 per cent of sufferers live. Prevalence there will grow from 12.65 million in 2006 to 62.85 million in 2050, accounting for 59 per cent of all cases, the study said.
It comes as other experts announced a new test that can predict a person’s risk of getting dementia in the next six years.
The test combines medical history, cognitive function and a physical examination and is 87 per cent accurate, according to experts at San Francisco VA Medical Centre in California. Neil Hunt, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Society, said that tools to predict dementia and encourage healthy life-styles were important to combat the disease. But he added: “There is a risk with any tool which predicts the likelihood of developing dementia of clinicians becoming reliant on diagnosis by numbers.
“Dementia is incurable and discovering you have a high chance of developing the condition may frighten people rather than empowering them into action to reduce their risk.
“Any risk model should be used alongside guidance on how people can reduce their chances of developing dementia.”
He said the Maryland research painted a “stark picture of the impact of Alzheimer’s disease on a global scale”. He added: “ “A national dementia strategy must consider the global scale of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.”

Bottom line... for all those affected and those noticing the increase, is that our global skies are being contaminated with aluminum and barium at alarming rates, due to the aerosol spraying program, (nicknamed Chemtrails), that are occurring in all areas of the USA and around the world.
If you don't know about this, you had better educate yourself and those you care about, because, as history shows, man has not been kind to mankind over the ages and who would be so ignorant to think we live in a different paradigm. Its time for all citizens of the planet to wake up!!
RUC, LAGUNA BEACH,
How much of the problem is really due to undiagnosed Mad Cow Disease? The US government is barring meat producers from testing for it....one has to wonder why.
Echo, Accokeek, MD
Stop the chemtrail spraying will stop the Alzheimers epidemic. It's that simple. People need to see that depopulation is part of this spraying program. Sick people make the system lots of money and when you finally die from the poisons it's one less person taking up space on the their planet.
HAARP plays a part also.

Alzheimer's like diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, joint disease, stroke, hypertension and most other chronic diseases of aging are associated with inflammation or an activated immune system. This inflammation is underwritten mostly by a diet heavy in refined salt/ sugar, grains and hydrogenated fats.Switching to a high dark produce diet diet reverses all these diseases. The chemicals in the environment play a small role,if any.

Maybe if the powers that be stop spraying aluminum oxide on us from their chemtrail planes this wouldnt happen?
CR, Bham, USA/WA
Aluminum oxide is also prevalent in our atmosphere now, as well as Barium, thanks to worldwide atmospheric weather manipulation and aerosol spraying operations, a.k.a., "chemtrails."
A common sight since the late 90's for anyone willing to study the sky for a few minutes.
Rick Moors, Santa Monica, CA
Maybe the reason it is so prevalent in Asia is because of the pollution levels. 48% is almost half.
Egypt, Marysville, CA,
I have been following the rise in numbers of dementia rates since the 1970's. Interestingly, at first the problem was increasing in countries that had health care deliverly service plans which made me suspect the causative agent as possibly medications specifically blood pressure and mental health meds. Although I continue to suspect a possible link in some cases to medications I now suspect the condition is more related to increased cerebral spinal fluid pressure and that a cure in some cases is tryphoning of the cranium. Currently research using a form of tryphoning is being conducted at Rush Mememorial in Chicago but for Parkinson's Disease which I would not expect tryphoning to be the solution. Two indicators of increased pressure probably related to the presence of Iron in the CSF are in women menopause and in both sexes, near sightedness. Unfortunately, many diagnosis are incorrect and overlapping but would definately like to see the medical researchers run tryphoning trials.

Aluminum has been suspect in Alzheimers for a while. Almost all anti-persperients contain aluminum-chloride. Just conincidence? Dunno.

British firm Regen therapeutics are/have developed a colostrinin (tm) remedy' which has shown promise and is expected to be released in the US market during the last quarter 07. It shows promise so far. I want it to make a difference and maybe taken earlier could reduce the plaque build up on the brain. They have a web site.
I have an interest in Regen shares and have held them for sometime. They are a very risky investment but if colostrinin helps others from this terrible disease it will be the best thing i have ever done to help others.

This trend may be caused by the Chemtrails being sprayed in our skies that contain Aluminum salts. Elevated aluminum levels have been found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. We are being poisoned by our own governments! WakeUp!
All this death and misery so the military can talk to their jarheads in submarines. Bravo! We are contained in a toxic soup of electromagnetic radiation that is over 1 million times stronger than naturally exists. We will ultimately pay a very heavy price.
Scottie, Raleigh, NC USA
With military aircraft spraying aerosol clouds of aluminum and barium in daily assaults on the people and the environment, is it any wonder that alzheimers is expected to become pandemic? Azheimers was the leading cause of death in Los Angeles last year and Los Angeles has been called "chemtrail central". Do your research; look up chemtrails, aerosol ops, HAARP and weather modification, then start to pay particular attention to the skies. Those are not contrails if they last more than a minute, they are chemically laden chemtrails and will slowly devolve into artificial chemical clouds. Clouds that make you and your family sick, clouds which may be killing the bees. Time to wake up and investigate what is really going on in your world.

You gotta wonder just what's being put into the food chain and/or the atmosphere by our governments...

One of the risk factor for de novo/ without a major gene Alzheimer's is increasing paternal age.
I had asked Dr. Bartzokis why risk of non-familial autism, schizophrenia, MS, and Alzheimer's risk increases with the age of the father at a person's birth.
George Bartzokis a well-known researcher in Alzheimer's and other disorders of myelin, wrote:
"The issue is that the older man will have sperm that has undergone more divisions and therefore had more chances to have mutations.
The COMPLEXITY of the myelination process makes it more vulnerable to mutations. I am not talking of one specific mutation. Many things could MANIFEST in the myelination or myelin breakdown process because it is so vulnerable - something going slightly wrong will impact it while it will not impact bone growth or the heart. A good example is ApoE4 - whatever else it may affect, it manifests in the reduced capacity of myelin repair and earlier onset of AD.'"
Leslie Feldman, Berkeley,
The article in my opinion was not finished. It did not state how people get dementia, or alzheimer. It talked about people being empowered to reduce their risk but doesn't say how. It also didn't say why 48 % of people with this disease are from Asia. Wittingly or unwittingly the author made this more of a hopeless article than one that could "empower" someone.
Laureen Pittman, santa barbara, CA
Maybe if the secret air force stopped spraying the aluminium chemtrails over every major city daily, people would get better. Aluminium crosses the blood brain barrier and accumulates, this spraying has been going on for years-it must cost billions, are we paying to be sprayed?
John, Boise, ID
Having lost my mother and my grandmother to this desease - I would very much appreciate if not just awareness is raised but early cure is sought for this deadly desease.
As the saying goes - for every desease there is a cure, we - as humans must focus on why this desease is spreading. More money must be spend on R&D efforts, as well as govts should support those careing for the sufferers. Scientists should help identify what is different that is causing this rise in Alzheimers. Is it the lifestyle we are adopting, or the food we are now food eating - with such a high level of additives, preservatives, and other chemicals. If food intake, or life style of certain people keep this number low - may be we can learn something from them ?
Syed Ahmad, Cardiff, UK,
There's no point frightening people when there really isnt any effective treatment that can prevent dementia with any certainity. Dietary or lifestyle changes MAY help, but how efficacious is it. This is the fallacy of assuming "awareness" and "ear;y detection" of a number of incurable disorders may lead to some great benefit, when it probably more than anything else just stirs anxiety and can add great cost to healthcare.
