An eight-year-old girl has been taken from her parents and put into care because she is seriously overweight.
The girl, who is 5ft (1.52m) tall, is a size 16 six sizes bigger than the average for her age. She has suffered several health problems associated with her weight. But her parents, from West Cumbria, say that they are devastated, and that her size is due to a medical problem or genetics, not a poor diet.
The girl’s mother said she and her partner would fight to get their daughter back. She added: “Our world has fallen apart. Our daughter doesn’t overeat and she’s active. She’s always been chubby but she’s always out playing. The only bad thing we have given her is fizzy drinks.”
It is the first time that Cumbria County Council has removed a child from parents because of obesity. Two months ago research showed that 40 per cent of people in West Cumbria were classified as overweight, and another 17 per cent obese. Officials said that there were other concerns about the girl’s upbringing but that it was her obesity that triggered the decision to put her into care.
There are no guidelines for social service about the issue. Anne Ridgway, chairman of the Cumbria Local Safeguarding Children Board, said: “Parental behaviour that leads to childhood obesity can be a form of neglect. But a child’s weight becomes a safeguarding issue only in extreme cases and thankfully they are very rare.”
The National Obesity Forum said that the girl was the latest in a significant but small number of children so obese they have been taken into care.
Colin Waine, the chairman of the forum, said: “We feel that there is never an easy option in these circumstances, but the preferred management is to work with families from the time children are born, so their growth can be monitored regularly. We need to work with families so these problems do not escalate.”

chances are this is genetic--an endocrinologist is the place to go. it wont show up in regular blood tests. this 4 yr old is typical. carbs is the enemy. her behavior is also typical of this disorder, go to an endocrinologist NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.........
betsy, little rock,
That poor child. I can't imagine how horribly traumatized she must be. Why do these people who are supposedly concerned about children not consider the emotional/psychological ramifications of the things they do? Unless the parents are physically restraining the child from exercising and shovelling food down her throat, having an obese child is *not* abusive. Genetics & some disorders can cause obesity. The lifelong emotional trauma caused to children removed from their parents because they are "fat" is far, far greater than any supposed health problems they *think* might be caused by the family. If they're that concerned, they need to work with the family, not remove children.
Lisa, Edmonton,
Oh, its increadibly cruel. Just imagine poor girl being forcefully deprived of her parents care, made feel hunger and forced to suffer from the thought that it is all her fault! That if she had eaten less, her mum wouldn't have lost her! Oh, my, the risk of a trauma is much higher, than possible diminishing of the risk to her physical health.

has this child been tested for hypothyroidism.? mine went undetected for 4 yrs because my Dr at the time kept brushing me off with things like you must eat too much ,cut out Potatoes and bread !!!! i have read that if you have the test and you are border line its not treated ,well that is not right, one tablet a day is all it takes to get back to normal. this episode will scar the child for life imagine being taken from your parents at 8yrs old ,poor wee lassy

I do not believe that this child was removed simply because of her weight, it would be interesting to find out Social Care's point of view but due to confidentiality issues this is not allowed so we have a rather one sided story from parents. Who's to say they aren't as perfect as they make out ???
Hannah , london,
I hope the officials have a program in place to help the parents learn about what is appropriate in raising their child. Let's not treat them as villains. Education can be all that is needed.
How many 8 year olds are 5 feet tall?
It must be a shock to them and the child!
Kate, montreal, canada
How many 8 year olds are 5.1? Doesn't this suggest she may actually have a condition or a genetic issue that is causing her weight to increase as well?
Les, there is plenty of research to suggest that a) overweight and even obese people don't across the board have eating disorders or eat badly or too much, and also that b) fatness and obesity are not the health risk that people believe it is. If there is any room for doubt in the scientific community on these issues, there are no grounds for social services to start taking children away from parents if obesity is the ONLY issue. (not that that's the case here)
Dolia, London,
The caretakers/parents are at fault. Totally. The idea that the child does not overeat and is active cannot be true. This is child abuse pure and simple.
