A mother was left clutching her dying baby after giving birth on a lavatory at a new hospital because there were no trained staff.
Catherine Brown, 30, endured the birth of her premature baby with only her mother for help as hospital staff said that they could not assist her because they were unqualified.
Queen’s Hospital in Romford, Essex, apologised yesterday for Ms Brown’s ordeal and said that it was now employing gynaecological specialists. Ms Brown, a surveyor, had to wait 20 hours for a scan after she began haemorrhaging and was taken by ambulance to the hospital’s accident and emergency ward.
Doctors advised her to have the pregnancy induced early because her life was at risk. Ms Brown was lying in a bed in a mixed-sex general ward when the labour started earlier than expected. She went to a lavatory and gave birth to Edward Paul Brown 22 weeks early on February 23. He died almost immediately.
Ms Brown, of Hornchurch, Essex. said: “I just sat there on the toilet looking at my dead baby. It was dreadful, a terrible nightmare. I still can’t believe the hospital had no trained-up staff who could help me with my poor baby. I had to go through sheer hell.
“I have come forward because I don’t want something like this to happen to anyone else. It was devastating. When I delivered him I just howled and howled. Edward was still attached to the umbilical cord and I remember sitting there just looking at him and thinking, ‘What do I do next? What?’ And then I started crying my eyes out and just repeating, ‘I'm sorry, baby, I’m so sorry’. ”
The hospital also nearly cremated Edward’s body without the family’s knowledge despite agreeing to release the body for a funeral. Ms Brown, who has an 18-month-old son, Matthew, said: “They didn’t even record the details of Edward’s birth. But he did exist. He has made sure that other families won’t have to go through what we did. We’ll never forget him.”
Her mother, Sheila Keeling, 51, said: “Catherine was left to deliver the baby alone with just me for help before cleaning herself up and going back to bed. It was horrific. I was running around frantically for over an hour trying to find gas and air for her, and pleaded with nurses, who seemed very matter of fact, to come and assist. The staff I did find told me they didn’t have the training to help.”
James Brokenshire, MP for Hornchurch, has raised the case with Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the £238 million Queen’s Hospital. “This has to be one of the most harrowing medical cases I have ever had to deal with,” he said. “Catherine almost died and she later discovered the baby had nearly been disposed of with medical waste.
“It caused tremendous distress to her and her mother. The trust has obviously responded by making significant changes in the way it manages early pregnancies, but questions remain as to how this was allowed to happen.”
A spokesman for the trust said: “We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Ms Brown. This matter has been fully investigated and senior medical and nursing staff have met with Ms Brown.” The hospital said that after Ms Brown’s case it had established a separate gynaecological accident and emergency service.

After having 2 boys at Harold Wood hospital, I was forced to have my third boy at Queens. After rumours of still births I was worried. 34 weeks I begged to be started off but to no avail. At my 36 week antenatal check, Ben had died we await pm results but we believe placental abrubption. WHY?

I to have experienced a horrific experience at Harold Wood hospital and sympathise with this woman. I wrote a 20 page letter and whilst I did get a reply, it was a matter of fact attitude. The trauma this can cause mothers is terrible and I am sorry but there are no excuses! It seems that even if you complain nothing gets done anyway. It is true that maternity units in havering are overstretched and I have heard some terrible stories from midwife's who work in our local hospitals. However it would seem that still nothing is being done. How any more mothers and baby's have to die. My thoughts are with the family of this sad story.

A TIME FOR ACTION IN BRITAIN! This apalling story is straight out of the darkest days of the Middle Ages...or from some primitive Third World country. Even Charles Dickens would be shocked and disgusted.
What the heck has happened to Great Britain?
"Will some responsible people please step forward and take charge!? You are urgently needed!!"
"There appears to be many serious social problems: in health, education, illegitimacy and teen pregnancies, alcoholism, immigration, affordable housing, etc., and too few serious, dedicated leaders speaking out and providing good leadership, action and example. If democracy fails, dictatorship may result."

This is absolutely appalling and makes you wonder how the state of healthcare ended up in this way. My condolences to Mrs Brown.
Roxanne Annoh, London,
Dear Yepoka I was recently undergoing an endoscopy at Queens Hospital in Romford and although it was nowhere near the dreadful experience that Ms Brown went through, I felt there was a general lack of concern overall. My request to be be properly sedated was not carried out efficiently and i suffered severe pain as i was concious enough to feel the whole procedure.
This was a most unpleasant experience and I was made to wait over two months for the result as the staff responsible had not forwarded the findings to my GP. It's a disgrace that a brand new Hospital costing £238 million is unable to provide suitably qualified staff to care for it's patients. Oldchurch Hospital which was closed down to make way for the new Queens Hospital showed me far more care and respect.

Alone with mum, terrified, no-help, in-a-toilet, in-pain, distort and then her wanted baby in front off her dying, then dead! can anyone imagine that this was worse than HELL for her!
MY HEART BLEEDS! when I think of this avoidable scenario!

I am not normally this outspoken. But I feel I cannot let this be.
Incredible. I am ashamed to be part of this country. I would be devastatedly ashamed if I were a worker in the hospital concerned. Is this Great Britain? Is it fit for purpose - it's a hospital for goodness sake? No qualified staff to deal with the problem and just left to deal with the problem by herself? After such a shameful incident - oh yes, opening a new unit will sort out the problem for good - no way. Oh my God!
I hope the people who held the post of Health Ministers in the past few years can sleep soundly at night. What kind of NHS have they left behind, even after spending billions more of our money? Or this could just be a nightmare. Everything will be OK tomorrow. I wish.

i am a mother of 3 children and i had all 3 at harold wood hospital and had no problems even though i did have a miscarrage when i was carying my 3rd child he was a twin and i must say all the staff at harold wood was brilliant so if they have shut down that maternity hospital where on earth have them good staff gone to i think the nhs should re-think of where they are placeing there staff i must say i really dont know how that lady must be felling down to the nhs attitued

But she placed herself and on advice to get help from the NHS, she followed what they said and then seems to have been abandoned in a NHS hospital!
What she went through and the emotional scaring this has done to her is unbelievable!

I think we should not exaggerate the matter here.
We do appreciate the trauma the patient was subjected to and this should not happen in a moderrn unit.On the other hand I am sure the lady was aware it was non viable pregnancy at 22 weeks of gestation and by law considered as induced abortion. So using the phrase (He died almost immediately) showed as if there was a man slaughter which was not.
The non availability of trained staff reflects the overstreching of maternity and gynaecology units and action is required in that aspect.
