LONDON Smokers are going to be confronted with stark images of the health effects of their habit because the impact of written warnings on cigarette packets is diminishing, the Health Secretary, Alan Johnson, said.
Ministers unveiled a series of 15 new images yesterday that will appear on packets from late next year, after market research, public consultation and a vote on the most effective deterrents for smokers.
The new warnings will show patients with tumours or the extent of potential lung damage caused by smoking, among other images. Cigarette packs with written warnings only will not be allowed on sale past September 30 next year.
Mr Johnson said: “We’ve had the messages on cigarette packets since 2003, warning that smoking kills, for instance, but the evidence is that’s diminishing in its effect.
“Using graphic images to get the same message across, that smoking kills, that people who smoke will die younger, has a more dramatic effect.”
The smokers’ lobby group Forest strongly opposes introducing graphic health warnings on tobacco packs. But Deborah Arnott, director of Ash, the antismoking group, said: “In countries where such warnings exist, quitting rates increased.”

It really is OTT, I'm so glad I smoke duty free.
What next, pictures of women being raped and murdered on wine bottles along with the comment 'most victims of ... are drunk', smoking cause beheadings etc.
I liken these pictures to a type of violent porn. I will complain to ofcom, it is offensive.
Tom, Sheffield,
i dont no oooooooooone person who has teeth like that from smoking, oh well who cares fags are fags, give em a good puff
mr x, stafford,
i think this is well over due.im a smoker(unfortunatly).smokers say "we know the effects"....bla,bla,yeah we do but we dont really accept it ,thats part of the addiction i think.if we really and truthfully faced the facts then we wudn't continue.
d, dublin,
This is absolutely rediculous. If the government wanted us to seriously quit smoking then they would ban cigarettes altogether and stop selling them. Of course they will never ban cigarettes because they're making far too much money selling them. I know the affects its my decision as an adult.
Adam, London, England
I know exactly what my lungs will look like in 30 years time. Why do I need to see this 20 times a day? Is this more of a thing about finding excuses to segregate smokers further? You know? "Dont come near me with that gross picture!"?
Rachel Rotherham, Huddersfield, England
I think its a great idea, Im currently trying to quit at present and its very hard. The writting on the packets are not a deterrent from my experience. A friend of mine recently holidayed in Thailand were these pictures are used on the cigarettes and he expressed they really put him off smoking.
Lisa Curry, London,
i think its an absuloute fantastic idea. if this means more people are going to quit. then it will save a lot of peoples money and people will feel better about the passive smoking
jeremy thomas, manchester, florida
This is a stupid idea! smoking is bad to health sure, but car fumes are just as bad if not worse.I am a non smoker but i think all these anti smoking regulations are simply nonsense, not to mention a bit over reacting. i think a law should be made against being drunk in public not against smoking in public..i dont see where is the common sense , if any, in such ideas.
sherif, Cairo,
This is a great oppertunity for somebody to make a small fortune.
If somebody was to produce and sell anti smoking ban cigarette cases and tobacco pouches they would be laughing all the way to the bank
Charles, Stowmarket, England
I won't say smoking is a really good thing. Obviously, as others legal-drugs, its effects are not as healthy as we'd want to, but, there is no reason to compare it to cocaine or heroine. No way at all.
Smoking is quite hateful and disgusting for those who don't smoke, i used to view it like peeing over other people while they are eating, but without the liquid characteristic. Otherwise, it doesn't impede you to take a healthy social life, not like alcohol, that turns you into an violent animal or, in others cases, depresing mourner.
Fight against drugs' traffic is not resulting at all,in fact, even one of three italian parliamentaries come to the camera high of cocaine... don't know if legalizing could be the solution (image the camera's president doing a break for coffee and some lines...)
Pablo, Motril, ESPAÃA
I do wish that in their fanatical pursuit of smokers, this government and ASH would spare a thought for those not involved in their rabid crusade.
I hardly think it is fair to put thousands of non smoking shop workers off their lunches, and imagine the nightmares if a small child found one of these packets in the street!
Rose, Leeds,
How many people read messages on cigarette packets? Those who do must be lonely and sad.
Charles, Stowmarket, England
Want to really upset smokers?
Display on the front of the pack, in larg gold numbers, the amount of tax they have just payed for there coffin nails to the government.
And inside tokens they can save towards a free deodorant spray, or breath mints. We would all apreciate that.
Mike, Hannover,
Brian Drury your a genius.
Make these photographs into cigarette cards to collect.
I can just hear the playground bargaining - 'I'll swap you a malignant tumour for a mouthful of rotten teeth.'
After all, cigarette packets always end up in the rubbish bin whereas a seperate card would be around for a lot longer.
200 fags for a full set of cards though? - I would think a lung transplant a better prize.
G J BUNTON, SLOUGH, BERKSHIRE
While they're at it they may as well put pictures of hideously obese people on McDonalds packaging or perhaps the result of alcoholism or the mangled corpse of a victim on drink-driving on bottles of beer. Except they'd never do that as the majority of people eat junk food and/or drink alcohol. Smokers are a minority and therefore an easy target for the government. Urgh. I'm not even a smoker and this annoys me. I'm pretty sure by now smokers are aware of the consequences of their habit without 'grotesque' images. If people want to smoke why can't they just smoke??
P.S. haha at the previous comment! :)
Fay Impey, Hartlepool, England
Fantastic! And why don't they do the same with alcohol? Why not having pictures of a cirrotic liver printed in a bottle? Oh, yes, it's true! Nowadays the devil is tobacco! There's no problem in being drunk. Moreover, it is healthy! Come on! Let's be less hypocritical!
Mireia, Barcelona,
Though most lung cancer is caused by smoking, fewer than two percent of smokers contract cancer (Professor Sir Richard Doll - 170 per 100,000).
It would be illegal to publicise the effect of a medicine that works in fewer than 2% of patients.
Similarly the warning that "Smoking seriously harms ... others around you" is fraudulent, not borne out by the clinical database of passive smoke, and totally contradicted by medical experts without vested interests.
For obvious reasons, the smoking ban in Ireland has now pushed up youth (15-18s) smoking by a massive 16.8% three years post-ban (Office of Tobacco Control data), and destroyed much of normal social life.
It seems Alan Johnson is taken in by the likes of 'Professor' Kenneth Warner who pockets $2m from Big Pharma to demonise smokers in the absence of a medical degree.
Harry Davies, Galway, Ireland
Does anyone remember the cards in tea/tea bag packets that you could collect and put in an album ? Perhaps the cigarette manufacturers could do the same. If they produced an album that you could stick the pictures in, I'm sure that it would be a fantastic success â the kids would love it ! Even better, if you managed to collect the full set, you could send it off to the manufacturers, who could reward you with a free carton of 200 cigarettes. This is an awesome marketing opportunity, which could increase cigarette consumption dramatically!
Brian Drury, London Colney, England
of course the effect of the writtne warning started to have less of an impact we got used to it, after the initial impact of these pictures for a few years we will get used to that then what next?? a bit of tumor in my cigarette packet??
Dave , london, england
The proposed images as part of the cigarettes packet is an absurd idea. The target today is cigarette, what will it be tomorrow? Let me guess: fast-foods and alcohol packaging showing graphic images of the effects of consuming these products?
