KUALA LUMPUR Malaysia plans to develop a halal meningitis vaccine jointly with Cuba within the next two years. Most meningitis vaccines are produced from pig products, which are forbidden among Muslims.
The project will cost 3.6 million ringgit (£520,000) and is aimed at the thousands of Muslims who are infected with the disease during the annual Haj pilgrimage to Mecca.
Mustapa Mohamed, the Higher Education Minister, said that Malaysia would provide two million ringgit for the project while Cuba would fund the remaining 1.6 million. The halal vaccine is a joint project between Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the Finlay Institute, in Havana.
Mr Mustapa said that 12 USM specialists and 30 Cuban experts would develop the vaccine from halal extracts from animals slaughtered according to Islamic rules.
Malaysia is trying to position itself as a global hub for the halal industry, which it estimates to be worth £280 billion annually. (AFP)

I am muslim and as far as I'm aware the Qu'ran only prohibits "eating the flesh of swine". Vaccines derived from pigs are highly purified and do not contain actual porcine material. It's the same ridiculous argument as refusing to use asthma inhalers because they contain alcohol. Haram substances are permitted to be used for medicinal purposes. Please can other muslims stop attention seeking and acting so precious and at least learn the basics of your religion before showing the rest of us up.

But surely, if someone dies because they have not been vaccinated this is part of Allah's big plan anyway? So why bother with a halal vaccine? The only difference for those that would take the vaccine is that He'll have to get them with a double-decker bus instead.

Pity they can't use the money for something more useful. First these people risk getting the illness by going on this unnecessary "pilgramage" and then expect government to come up with vaccines that satisfy their superstitions.

Very good idea!
