Microsoft abruptly closed down four pro-anorexia websites in Spain yesterday after a complaint that they were endangering the lives of teenage girls.
The websites — which offer tips such as “take up smoking” and “if your stomach rumbles, hit it” — were accused of teaching teenagers how to starve themselves.
Internet companies usually wait for a court order before closing any sites that they host. But Microsoft acted swiftly after complaints from a Catalan watchdog that several blogs on its Live Spaces community glorified starvation as a lifestyle choice.
Such sites worship “thinspirational” celebrities such as Victoria Beckham and refer to “my friend Ana” instead of anorexia to avoid discovery by parents.
Jaime Esteban, an official from Microsoft's Spanish division, agreed that the blogs “infringe all the rules on content created by users and visible on our sites”.
He thanked the internet watchdog, IQUA, for alerting it to the sites and invited it to get in contact if it found “any other objectionable content”.
Regional Spanish governments have taken the lead in fighting eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. In January, Madrid's regional government closed down “The Great Ana Competition”, a website that awarded a diploma to the girl who ate the fewest calories in a two-week period.
They filed a suit against the promoters of the competition, which used a scoring system that doctors said “would cause malnutrition in normal women”.
The site awarded a single point for those who ate less than 850 calories a day, progressively increasing the points for those who ate even less. Competitors who managed to consume less than 150 calories in a day were given nine points. A 24-hour fast earned contestants the maximum ten points.
Officials have condemned such websites as a “serious health risk for young people”, particularly those already suffering from an eating disorder. They said that girls with anorexia or bulimia could die if they followed the advice of such websites.
The Catalan authorities have heaped praise on Microsoft's swift action. Santiago Ramentol, the president of IQUA, said that he was “very satisfied with the decision of the company, given the lack of worldwide laws regulating the use (of the internet)”.
He said that other internet hosts they had approached in similar cases, such as Google or Hispavista, had demanded court judgments before acting.
Health experts in Britain are increasingly worried about the growth of websites that promote anorexia as a lifestyle choice rather than a potentially fatal disease. Britain's Eating Disorders Association says that there were more than 500 pro-anorexia sites on the internet, with names such as “Salvation through Starvation” and “Feast or Famine”.
Steve Bloomfield, of the EDA, said this year that the sites were often set up by young people with “no idea of the potentially deadly consequences of developing anorexia nervosa”. He added that they could be persuading sufferers to refuse treatment. “About one in five people who don't get appropriate treatment die prematurely, so [these websites] are literally killing people,” Mr Bloomfield said.
Last year, the Madrid Government also banned models it deemed excessively thin from participating in the capital's Cibeles fashion show, saying that they encouraged anorexia among girls. Since Madrid banned models with a body mass index (BMI) of less than 18 last year, other fashion capitals have come under pressure to follow suit.
The fashion industry in Italy signed a manifesto with the Government, vowing to take a harder line on skinny models. All models will now have to produce health certificates declaring that they do not suffer from an eating disorder. They must not have a BMI below 18.5.
Spain's central Government has also signed a deal with the country's fashion industry to remove unnaturally thin dummy's from shop windows, fearing that they too promote an impossible ideal for young women to aspire to and encourage eating disorders.
The fashion industry came under heavy criticism last year for promoting an unhealthy body ideal after two models suffering from anorexia died in Brazil and Uruguay.
'I thought I would die'
A site on LiveJournal, “the world’s largest pro-anorexia website”, was yesterday full of postings like these:
"Today was good. Only 200 calories + 5 hours at work where i’m on my feet all day. I feel a little dizzy, but the happy and proud feeling is 100x better. Although, i’m dreading tomorrow. I have to go to a restaurant with my friends for lunch."
"So Im an experienced faster, Ive fasted for 10 days, 7 days and usually fast for at least 3 days every 2 weeks. Today was the 3 day of my fast and I woke up at 8 o’clock and I thought I was going to die. I was in a pool of sweat, my heart was beating so fast I could hardly breathe . . . What was that about?"
"I have never had anything like that before, and now Ive eaten 500 cals."
"Yesterday was my second fasting day, until I wrecked it. a bowl of potato chips before my run. purged all that up, thankfully"

I See No Problem With The Sights.
You Can't Teach Anorexoria.
Molly, Portland, OR,
I was shoked when i discovered these sites about four years ago now, there has been talk about shutting them down before. I do not beleive it would be a good idea to shut these sites down, they are there for a reason, these girls need one anothers support and can trust one another. Shut them down and you will force these girl 'underground' which will be alot more dangerous. I beleive there should be restrictions and more sites showing the danger of Anarexia to the girls who stumble upon the sites or opnes that use them regularly.
These girls need help by creating more supportive anarexia sites not shutting them off. But in the end it is the girls who have to take the steps to recovery.
jessica, brighton, south england
it's true that there are some people out there seeking drastic weight loss advice, in an attempt to "catch" anorexia, but i don't think the people who are benefitting from knowing there are a thousand others out there like them deserve to be punished by these sites getting shut down. eating disorders are already so isolating that the one support center we have shouldn't be shut down.

LiveJournal is a blogging site, not a pro-anorexia one! It does have some pro-anorexia blogs on it, as some people choose to write that stuff, but it's got millions of other sorts of blogs too!
Jay, London,
Not all such sites are bad or teaching impressionable people to 'kill' themselves. Many people go there for support and encourage one another to seek treatments. It's where a lot of sufferers go for understanding so that they won't be looked down upon and treated as inferior by others around them.
It would be a horrific if these sites were all shut down as then sufferers of Anorexia or Bulimia would be alone, forced to get more secretive and would never truly know when they needed specialist help as who would there be to ask who wouldn't scorn them or 'freak out' about it?
It's a horrible disorder to have and if these individuals find it easier to cope by talking to those that are going through the same problems, then let them have it. This is just the first step of getting help and learning to cope together.
Villon, South England,
This is not about censoring speech, it's about saving lives of people who can't save themselves. These people are writing how to kill and how to hurt yourself. Would you be a proponent for sites that tell you how to cut yourself? Well anorexia and bulimia can be just as deadly.
Vegetarianism and anorexia, a disorder are very different. One's a healthy choice the other is death.
Ashley, Washington, DC
these sites also give support to poeple with eating disorders. ther were not made to encourage anyone to develop eating disorders and without them hundreds of girls will be alone with their disorder. there are also posts not mentioned here where girls persuade others not to commit suiicde and posts where girls are given support to recover from their eating disorder.
jane, northumberland, UK
These sites are extremely dangerous. They become almost like a cult, encouraging impressionable teenagers to pursue a deadly path of perfection through starvation, and deserve to be shut down. While I don't think you can simply 'catch' an eating disorder, I should think these sites may push people wavering on the edge over. Pro-ana and pro-mia sites are some of the saddest and most heart-rending stories you can ever read - the reckless downwards spiral of what is suicide, in the name of an impossible ideal. These sites only encourage you further into eating disorders, and sometimes actively hinder participants from seeking treatment by painting it as a lifestyle rather than a mental disease.
Provided these shut downs don't spread to the more neutral, eating disorder support type sites, I think this is a good idea.
Pip, Cambridge,
I run a blog in the US that attempts to be a voice of reason for these young women who have entered or are thinking of entering the 'proana' lifestyle.
The reality is it takes about 5 minutes to set up a new site, these kids are tech savvy and they are laughing at their computer illiterate parents who have 'no clue' about their starvation lifestyle.
Awareness, not censorship will go a lot further in this effort.
Heather, Milwaukee, WI
Good, good, good!
This is a mental illness which is killing not just young girls but men and mature women who should have the confidence to know it is nonsense.
I would ban all diet sheets and articles from magazines. They fuel an obsession and a discomfort around food which actually leads to weight gain.
Eat well and be active, thats all that is needed, but there are no fortunes to be gained for the diet and "health" industry from simple common sense.
CA Metcalfe, England,
First they close down these sites in the name of protecting young girls.
Next they will close down jihadist sites in the name of national security.
Then they will close down racist sites in the name of protecting diversity.
Then they will close down anti immigration sites in the name of protecting multiculturism.
Then they will close down religious sites to protect sinners from being offended by them.
Then they will close down antireligious sites to protect the faithful from being offended.
Then they will close down libertarian sites to protect people from developing anti government ideas.
Then they will close down political sites which challenge ideologies and policies to protect the government.
Then they will close down all sites which publish information, news unflattering to the powerful or ideas which challenge the status quo.
We will be left with an internet, where all speech is censored, news is filtered, discussion is monitered and dissent illegal.
Emily, Galway, Ireland
Holly white sheets... 1/3 of our children are obese and 2/3s are overweight and we are censoring stuff about starving ourselves to death? Let me guess - the women at the Internet watchdog have a BMI of... 40?
if this think tank would advocate an end to agricultural subsidies of meat and sugar - that would be one thing.
but going after freedom of speech in the name of saving teenage girls is like prohibiting individuals from claiming that smoking is cool and that they enjoy alcohol.
I am a vegetarian but I cannot stop somebody from claiming that he likes meat or cheesecake. I can offer alternatives but infringing his freedom of speech is not in my best interest and a price not worth paying?
raw prohibition just pushes everything into the underground where nothing is transparent and not real help can be provided to those in need.
