Q I was a competing long-distance runner, but was diagnosed with osteoporosis last year and told never to run again. Any suggestions as to how I can keep fit? SB from Bristol
A Go run. You are at risk of a fracture because of your condition, which causes low bone density – specifically of the foot, in your case – but as long as you are careful and can avoid falling, you will be doing no damage. A proper high-energy diet is also critical, as poor nutrition is also linked to low bone density.
Q I suffer from Raynaud’s, and my fingers and toes feel frozen throughout the winter. I also suffer from rosacea, which is at its worst after eating and drinking. I take medication for an underactive thyroid – is there a connection? SM from Ireland
A I doubt it, especially if your underactive thyroid gland is well controlled. Rosacea – a condition marked by outbreaks of blushing or spots on the face – is often best treated with a regular, low-dose antibiotic, so see your doctor about it now and avoid triggers such as spicy foods. When those with Raynaud’s disease are exposed to a change in temperature, their blood is partially prevented from reaching the extremities of the body. Regular exercise does help to stimulate the circulation, so keep this going and avoid getting your hands cold during the winter months as best you can. Q A physiotherapist recently told me I had an “anterior-leaning pelvis”. What is this problem, and do I need to take action? ES from London
A An anterior pelvic tilt is when the pelvis is aligned in such a way that the bottom of the spine sticks out slightly. Although not a big problem, it can have the effect of putting undue strain on the muscles and ligaments of the pelvis, lower back and abdomen. My advice is to do regular Pilates exercises, which will help to realign your normal anatomy and also prevent problems such as lower-back pain in the future.
