Dozens of hospital wards all over England are being closed to new admissions in order to control a highly infectious winter vomiting disease.
The closures offer the quickest way of controlling the outbreak of norovirus infections, which although seasonal, has started sooner than usual and could involve more cases than in previous years.
The virus causes a short-lived infection with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and fever and can spread quickly, costing the NHS more than £100 million a year.
The infective dose is very small, so anybody looking after a sufferer is in danger of catching the illness. Scrupulous hygiene – including the use of gloves for cleaning toilets, for example – is vital.
Many hospitals are appealing to anybody suffering from vomiting or diarrhoea symptoms not to visit while they are unwell, to come in unnecessarily, or to bring in small children.
At Torquay Hospital, for example, which has been affected “on and off” by the virus since early November, a spokesman said: “We are still appealing to people to think twice about visiting or coming into A&E if they have the symptoms.”
Cruise ships, which often suffer norovirus outbreaks, have found it extremely difficult to eliminate. The NHS policy of closing wards to new admissions may seem extreme, but is effective.
“Taking action early in an outbreak by closing a ward to new admissions can help control outbreaks” an Health Protection Agency (HPA) spokeswoman said.
“A study by the HPA has shown that outbreaks of norovirus are shortened when control measures at healthcare settings are implemented quickly, such as closing wards to new admissions within four days of the beginning of the outbreak and implementing strict hygiene measures.”
Estimates of actual numbers of infections are largely guesswork, since most people treat themselves at home and do not even consult a doctor.
The only hard data are the confirmed laboratory reports from the HPA, which represent only a tiny fraction of total cases. This year up to the end of November there had been 1,325 confirmed cases, the highest since the equivalent period of 2002, when there were 1,845.
But only one case in about 1,500 is ever confirmed by lab tests, and this year a more sensitive test has been introduced by the HPA’s regional laboratories. So it is possible that the rise is simply an artefact of the new testing method.

Everyone assumes this is a VIRUS.
But with Hugh Pennington farming the FLAK I would just ask one QUESTION.
Can we have an AUDIT on GMO FOOD eaten DIRECTLY or after being FED to ANIMALS first in the UK?
Projectile vomiting was never an illness but ALWAYS an ANAPHYLACTIC reaction to a PROTEIN UNRECOGNISED by our bodies.
The work of Charles Richet was in 1902 - have we learned nothing in our race to a 2008 FRANKENSTEIN FOOD world?
GMO incidently is BANNED in about every EUROPEAN country with about 3 exceptions.
Guess who is at the forefront of European exploitation of GMO (and its people?). OK UK?
Who booted out the WORLD EXPERT from the UK on GMO many years ago in about 2 days after 35 years of research for this country? OK UK?
The SCIENCE in UK makes me SICK!
And it doing a GOOD job on many more.

I contracted this illness back in September after a hospital visit.
On complaining to the hospital about it, they denied I contracted it at the hospital.

I and my partner seem to have picked up the virus just before New Year's Eve - my partner started feeling ill on New Year's Day but I seemed OK and went to the office on 2 Jan - I wish I had not as I started feeling ill that afternoon and I could have infected work colleagues. I have been ill since. It seems likely that if someone close to you gets the infection you are likely to get it too! Stay at home. This illness is very unpleasant. You just have to ride it out - sleep - drink fluids and sleep. Best wishes

Two out of four members of my family had severe sickness and felt low for a few days. The other two people felt nauseas and had prolonged headaches. No one has had much of an appetite either.
J Bell , Grimsby,
Half my family had the sicvkness the other half felt sick and had severe headaches. Left feeling weak and without an appetite.
J Bell , Grimsby,
I am sympathetic to all those who encounter this illness. Is there no immunization for it? What does work to help?
Good health wishes to all!

I've just heard that parents should keep their children away from school if they're not well....and everyone in Britain will win the lottery jackpot this year.

Our entire close family contracted this unpleasant virus. Whilst it was at its worst for 48 hours, it has continued to make everyone feel low and most have had a severe headache, which has not eased even with paracetamol.
It may be coincidence but the two people who had had the flu jab had reduced symptoms and whilst they felt the nausea and stomach ache, they avoided the vomiting an diarrhoea.
After picking up for a few days most members of the family have experienced a relapse.
What a way to strt the New Year!!

where is the point is visiting gp's in this country? all the advice that they have is to take paracetamol for any illness for any pain regardless of what the patients real problem is. the health services in this country need drastic reforms.
