Coffee being sold at high street chains often contains hundreds of calories per cup — almost a third of the daily recommended intake for women.
High fat content in the milk, combined with larger cups, means that chains are selling drinks that contain well over 500 calories each.
A Starbucks large white chocolate mocha with whip made with whole milk has 628 calories, nearly a third of the recommended daily amount for women and a quarter of that for men.
Research by the consumer group Which? found that a medium-sized mocha with whipped cream made with semi-skimmed milk from Caffe Nero has 326 calories.
This compared with 297 calories in a medium cup of mocha flake made with whole milk, cream and flake from Costa Coffee.
None of the three major coffee chains puts nutritional details on unpackaged products. Which? surveyed the leading coffee chains and 18 independent cafés around the country.
Lesley McLauchlan, a nutritionist from London, said: “It is quite horrifying how much milk is needed to make some of these coffees. And I don’t think most people have a clue how many calories they contain.”
The survey also found that independent outlets were cheaper on average than the three big chains.
Starbucks was the dearest place to buy a medium-sized cappuccino and single-shot espresso, charging £2.29 and £1.40. This compared with an average £1.48 for a cappuccino and £1.11 for an espresso at the independents.

It is much better for us to make the coffee ourselves. Using the black coffee, low-fat milk, and the zero calorie sweeter, the total calorie for that is very low and it tastes as good as these in the coffee shops.

Just consider the humble Mocha: Caffine, Fat, Sugar, Chocolate.
Are there any essential food groups missing? Does this mean that it qualifies as a superfood?

Well, this is certainly newsworthy. Large drink made with full-fat milk, chocolate and whipped cream is â hold the front page â not all that great for you.
So don't drink one every day. But do enjoy the occasional treat.

For crying out loud. Calories do not make you fat. LACK OF EXERCISE makes you fat. It is perfectly ok to have a Cappucino everyday. However, unless you exercise, those calories will be converted into fat and you will put on weight. If you exercise regularly, not only will you burn more calories (cardio exercise especially good at this), but weight work helps to increase your metabolism and allows you to increase your body's efficiency at burning calories. It is not simply about calorie intake.
It is exactly this kind of misleading statistical gibberish that leads to panic legislation (albeit by an intellectually vacant government) such as giving obese people food vouchers to eat more healthily.
Exercise for 1 hour per day 4 times per week at a reasonable intensity and the weight will come off and stay off, regardless of what you eat.

Anyone who needs whipped cream on their coffee clearly knows nothing about coffee. Why would you want to ruin a decent coffee like that?

Headlines seen in papers regarding this "The COFFEE that contains a third of daily calorie intake" and "CAPPUCCINO can contain over 500 calories".
I understand this makes good headlines but "a large white chocolate mocha with whip made with whole milk" is NOT a cappuccino. A cappuccino is an espresso with steam-frothed milk in a coffee cup (a coffee-cup sized coffee cup at that) and a coffee is, well, coffee beans brewed with water in the manner of your choice.
So headline should be "Frothy milk and sugar drink with cream" contains lots of calories. Which, as Jessica has already noted, is not going to surprise anyone with half a brain.

White chocolate, whip cream and full fat milk, of course it's going to be full of calories! Most people who visit coffee houses usually go for a simple latte with semi skimmed milk. Once in a while a high fat drink is treat and the price, has this journalist been into a pub recently? When coffee gets more expensive than beer, then we can complain. I agree starbucks is expensive compared to ther coffee houses, there is a simple solution, if it's too fatty and expensive, then dont go, spend your money somewhere else!
