An extra 1.5 million people could benefit from regularly taking statins, the chloresterol-lowering drugs, potentially saving thousands of lives every year, a health watchdog says today.
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is issuing guidance to help doctors identify people at risk of cardiovascular disease who may benefit from the drugs, which are taken by four million people in England and Wales. This could increase the number of people over 40 taking the drugs on prescription to nearly six million, meaning that the cost to the NHS would exceed £1 billion a year.
The drugs are already prescribed to patients to help manage heart and stroke conditions. The latest guidance suggests that they should be more widely used as a preventative measure.
Some experts suggest that greater emphasis should be placed on personal chloresterol targets for each patient.
The guidance urges doctors to look at risk factors using information in GP records. NICE recommends that those thought to have a risk of at least 20 per cent of developing cardiovascular disease within ten years should be given statins. Doctors should first ensure that the risk — and the level of blood fats, known as lipids — is reduced as much as possible through diet and exercise.
Statins work by reducing levels of low-density lipoprotein, the “bad” form of cholesterol, and are estimated to prevent up to 10,000 deaths a year.
Peter Weissberg, of the British Heart Foundation, said: “Relying on patients to attend surgeries for assessment will fail to reach many of those from socially deprived communities most at risk. The BHF is disappointed that NICE ducked the issue of providing guidance on target levels of cholesterol for people who don’t yet have heart disease, but are at high risk.”

Perhaps 1 patient will benefit for every 3000 who are advised to start statins. Is this good use of scarce NHS money? More citizens would benefit from robust public health policies reducing OBESITY and SMOKING and ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION. Typical this government to seek an easy option!

Statins block the production of Co Enzyme Q10 which is ironically essential for heart health. I have known a number of people with severe side effects. I heard a doctor on one of the Radio 4 medical programmes saying that a close study of the research suggests that statins are not a panacea.

My father had 1st heart attack at age 53. His brothers died in their late 50's due to heart disease. I had minor heart attack at age 49. My fit son, 31, and vegetarian daughter, 27, both have high cholesterol. Neither of their GP's will prescribe statins for them. It's about time the NHS woke up!

I have just finished a letter of complaint to NICE. Also, the FDA has reports of over 600 deaths. Also 662 Cases of Cognitive Damage have been reported to Medwatch. Cognitive damage=loss of memory and TGA. Also reported include polyneuropathy, muscle pain, congestive heart failure (CHF). Beware

Beware of Statins. I have been on & off Statins 3 times. Each time, the side of my face & lower legs & feet became semi-numb. I am sure that I have been left with permanent damage. I was told by my doctor, not to let anyone give me Statins. I think they are not for everyone.

It seems absurd to spend an extra £1bn on people who aren't even ill (who could probably protect their health better by eating properly) and yet deny drugs to people with Alzheimers.

I'm on them at 40mg dose and they do induce severe cramp. However due to having a mini stroke i have to carry on with them. I wake up in agony. I don't think they should be dished out to all. my husband has them & has developed a very painful foot since. Its unbearable. More research needed

That indeed is positive information----however since the first records of levels of chloresterol that needed control were published the treatable levels have reduced considerably making the drug companies rich wihout any significant evidence of reducing incidence of life threatening consequence-----Is it the way all insurance is sold ?? Target levels are essential and this must be related to improved prognosis ,otherwise the only beneficiaries are indeed the drug producing indstries

More meddling by an incompetent government in Health Issues.
Someone must give me a good argument why I should take statins which inhibit the liver from producing cholesterol which is necessary for human life. And the level of below 3 which they advocate is laughable and unscientific.

These are extremely powerful drugs and can have very undesirable side effects. They are not sweets. A neighbour of ours had tendons snap in both his legs and now walks with difficulty. The statins dissolved his tendons as well as the plaque in his veins....

Everyone involved with these sorts of "recommendations" and any sort of medical research should have to declare all payments and incentives from drug companies and any other source just as MP's do and for the same reason.
It will be a far more effective way of improving the health of the nation.
