A gene linked to obesity causes people to put on weight by keeping them hungry, scientists say.
Previous research had shown that the gene, known as FTO, was strongly associated with obesity. But it was not clear whether this was to do with increasing appetite or burning calories.
The new study of 3,337 children shows that the gene’s effects are due to a lack of normal appetite control.
Usually the act of eating “switches off” the appetite and creates a feeling of satiety or “fullness”. The FTO gene stops this happening, scientists at University College London found.
Children with two copies of a high-risk version of the gene were less likely to have their appetite suppressed by eating. FTO is the first common obesity gene to be identified in Caucasian populations.
Jane Wardle, the study leader, said: “People who carry the risky variant of this gene are more vulnerable to the modern environment with big portion sizes.”
The new findings are published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

It seems to me that the "fatness" gene remarkably only developed subsequently to the development of the USDA/grain merchants "Food Pyramid" and Dr A. Keys "heart-lipid theory. The increase in obesity and CHD in the uS reflects the increase in margarine use and processed grain products.

Possibly you don't see obesity in Ethiopia because they don't have the gene? (Didja miss the bit about Caucasian populations?)
Ethiopia does in fact have food.

no- lack of self-discipline and greed make them fat

Does this so-called gene also force fat people to stuff their chops with Macdonalds, pizza and takeaway constantly !?
On a more serious note, if this is true, this gene only makes a person remain hungry. It doesnt influence what the person eats, eating celery all day isnt going to make you fat !!

I'm sorry if my view sounds somewhat cynical but... Obesity Genes? Destined to be fat? You don't see any obese people in ethiopia do you because there's no food! Genes aside, the only thing that makes people fat is constantly putting bad food in your mouth!!!!

Throughout my life I have battled a weight problem and have been told repeatedly by various medics that I am fat because I am lazy, greedy, weak-willed and self-delusional over the amount of food I eat. Now that real genetic reasons are beginning to emerge will they apologise? No, I didn't think so
