A swimmer has been banned from his local pool because of his unusual goggles.
Roland Grimm, right, in his late 60s, said: “I’m very upset because it seems mad. I’ve used these goggles in more than 100 pools and no one else has ever complained. After you’ve been swimming for 40 years all over the world you know what works best for you and what’s safe.”
Gary Dark, manager of the leisure centre in Swiss Cottage, northwest London, said the goggles were a health and safety risk because the glass was not shatter-proof and the nosepiece could cause breathing difficulties.

Another incredibly stupid controversy. Let the old guy have his fun. If he wants to swim in a cesspool wearing a wetsuit made of plate armor...be my guest.
Fluoric, Scotts Valley, CA, USA
It is the lifeguard who is responsible for you. They have to follow rules and even the smallest deviance leaves lifeguards liable. NB Mouth to nose is done in the water , you have one hand free, masks are tight and clumsy: you can injure people trying to remove them and lose valuable time.
Poppy, Manchester,
The nose covering is interesting. Recent health warnings regarding poor sanitation in public pools have recommended keeping water out of your nose. I guess I really never thought about it but doesn't having a large group of people blowing their nose into a pool sound disgusting?
Greg, Los Angeles, California
"How can you do mouth to nose resuscitation if the mask is covering the nose? "
1st, you do mouth to MOUTH + nose ressucitation on infants only. On children/adults, you pinch the nose shut, and do mouth to mouth res.
2nd, would Jack have us ban motorbike/horse riders banned from wearing helmets?
Helen, Bristol,
Jack, have you ever, ever thought of taking the goggles off if resuscitation is necessary? Or is there a bye law covering removal of goggles?.........
David, Warrington, UK
I'm shocked swimming is still allowed in Britain. I would have thought the with the amount of swimming accidents and deaths that occur every year the government would have stepped in by now to ban it altogether. It's an outrage. Ban swimming now before we have another accident!
Stewart, Beijing,
"How can you do mouth to nose resuscitation if the mask is covering the nose?"
Remove. The. Mask.
Josh, Bristol, England
Jack asks "How can you do mouth to nose resuscitation if the mask is covering the nose"?
Take the mask off.
Ian, Menorca, Spain
1 Water is unsafe. So ban swimming.
2 Jack in Bristol: you remove the mask before attempting to resuscitation. (it's a mask, not a crash helmet for x's sake) Is this so difficult. I hope I never have to be rescued by someone with your imagination.
Bob, Sheffield,
"How can you do mouth to nose resuscitation if the mask is covering the nose? "
Don't know about you, but I'd probably remove them if it came down to it.
MattyG, Brisbane, Au
Forget the goggles!
The real Health and Safety issue here is that there's water in the swimming pool and someone could drown! Furthermore the water is chlorinated and this could cause an adverse skin reaction.
I can only strongly urge them to close the pool to the public this instant!
Rudi, Fleet, UK
How can you do mouth to nose resuscitation if the mask is covering the nose?
You take the mask off obviously!
Freddie Smith, London, UK
Who beleives that a comercial face mask would include glass that is not shatter proof. No one is going to manufacture a mask or goggles that have glass lenses that are not shatter proof. Performing CPR?? Come on, the first step is to get everything out of the way in an effort to clear the airway.
Richard, Stafford, USA
Same happened to me in next-door Camberley.
The excuse there was "they would not be able to see if I had a noosebleed"
(oh... mine are shatterproof - I agree on that part)
The only H&S I saw in that pool was the kids deliberately coming into the swim lanes and the guards not doing anything.
Tom, Yateley, UK
How can you do mouth to nose resuscitation if the mask is covering the nose? That is a reason why we ban snorkeling goggles in our pool, and allow regular goggles which cover just the eyes.
Jack, Bristol, England
Too many organisations (inc government at all levels) are interfering with our rights to choose.
If I want to walk on a dangerous cliff-top that's MY business. Put up a sign and I can make an informed choice.
If I engage in an activity which may cause ME breathing difficulties thats also my choice
R Bingham, Lauzun, France
A mask of this design does not present a breath hazard. Anybody who has used one for a period of time understands how they operate. While swimming you inhale through your mouth as usual, you then exhale through your nose. By design, the force of air leaving your nose will sweep out of the mask.
Ralph, Berlin,
I had this experience. My goggles didn't even cover my nose. So, after being 'told off' I took the opportunity to complain that the H & S issue which concerned me was the two 18 year old pool attendants who were either half asleep or having 10 min long personal chats with their backs to the pool.
karen, tonbridge,
The Manager and staff who spotted this danger need commendation not condemnation. The fact that these goggles have been used more that 100 times before does not show that they are safe. The owner and other users of the pools have been lucky
Griffiths, Stockport, England
You wear goggles in a pool because chlorine hurts your eyes and you feel the burn for a couple of hours after getting out.
Mike, Dallas,
Most people exhale as they swim under water. Personally, I do that through my nose. i'm not really sure what the specific qualm with this type of mask is on that, bit it is plausible.
As for the glass, yes, having frantically cleaned glass out of a pool before the little kids came in, I agree,
Brent, Winnipeg, Canada
I worked as a lifeguard for 5 years as a student - this is a standard rule. Masks DO cause breathing difficulties as you can still inhale, even with a covering, and this can cause you to breathe in any water in the mask. It's obvious why breakable glass is banned.
Why use a mask in a pool?
Poppy, Manchester,
"we're banning WATER from the pools as ice is not shatterproof and it impairs breathing, fun."
Kai, Eugene, Oregon
Of course it has to be something more than his googles. Maybe he was "that guy" wearing the bright red speedo around the pool.
Jason, Camp Victory, Iraq
Broken glass in a pool is pretty nasty. I think this man should comprise and get a shatterproof diving mask if he prefers this sort of goggle and wants to swim in this pool. It is absurd to claim that a pool's policy of banning shatterproof glass inside it's waters is unreasonable.
Kirk, Ann Arbor, United States
Because "breathing difficulties" is a problem when you're UNDER WATER.
Lisa, Panoka Falls, US
