What is it?

Oral herpes is a common mouth infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), and the small blisters it raises around the lips are known as cold sores. Most of us will have been infected by the virus, many in childhood. The first infection often causes no symptoms, with the virus lying dormant until reactivated.

What causes it?

Triggers for such a reactivation are as diverse as stress, strong wind, bright sunshine and illness. If you’re susceptible, preventive measures include wearing sunblock around the lips, eating healthily and keeping fatigue to a minimum. Don’t kiss someone with a cold sore, and avoid oral sex if you or the other person has a cold sore or genital herpes.

What are the symptoms?

A tingling sensation that lasts several hours before blisters appear, typically on the edge of the lip. The scabs remain for at least a week.

How is oral herpes best treated?

The earlier, the better. An antiviral cream, acyclovir, is the standard treatment. It can be bought without prescription. Acyclovir tablets are stronger and more effective but you’ll need to see your doctor. For more information visit www.herpes.org.uk .
