Thousands of children are being offered the MMR vaccine after the number of cases of measles recorded this year reached more than 1,000 for the first time in more than a decade.
Doctors fear that the illness could sweep through the country if children and young teenagers are not vaccinated as a matter of urgency.
The number of cases in England and Wales reached 1,049 cases by October — almost ten times the number recorded in 1996, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said yesterday. The figure for the whole of last year was 990.
Mary Ramsay, an immunisation expert at the agency, attributed the rise to the relatively low take-up of the combined jab for measles, mumps and rubella.
About two thirds of the cases this year have occurred in London, but health officials in the North West are so concerned about local outbreaks that they are beginning a vaccination programme and have written to the parents of 10,534 children in Cheshire identified by their records as having missed the MMR vaccination.Across England, one child in four has not received the suggested two doses of MMR, leaving take-up significantly below the level required to prevent an epidemic. It is estimated that a large outbreak could affect 30,000 to 100,000 children across the country.
There have been 68 reported cases in central and eastern Cheshire and 107 confirmed cases throughout the North West to the end of last month, representing the highest figure outside London.
Vaccination teams will move into 177 primary schools and 33 secondary schools from next Wednesday. But they will not inoculate children without parental consent.
Across Britain, 85 per cent of two-year-olds had the first dose of the triple MMR jab in the past year. To achieve the “herd immunity” that is needed to all but eradicate the illness, 95 per cent of children need to be vaccinated. Only 24 out of 152 primary care trusts recorded take-up rates of more than 90 per cent for at least one dose, and none achieved the 95 per cent mark over the past year.

If you actually read about the effects of immunisations and side effects it is a minefield of contradictions and bad science. I have not immunised my son and am happy with this informed decision.
Kathryn Weymouth, Alton, UK
would your rather your child die of measles (worse case scenario) or take 10 minutes out to get them immunised? I work in a busy A and E department and I know I would rather my child have the immunisation and be a little under the weather for 2 days than get full blown measles, mumps or ruebella!
rachel, liverpool, uk
Do some research about the single vaccines. They are not all they're cracked up to be. It's a difficult decision but make sure you have all the facts before making it.
Nadia, Hamilton, Bermuda
"MMR is NuLab authoritarianism". MMR vaccine was introduced by Edwina Curry under the last Conservative administration. Paranoia about the Labour government is best left our of debates about public health. The government has followed expert opinion on this issue, not a political agenda.
Anthony, Birmingham, UK
"Measles" means "visitation by a goddess" (Sanskrit). It's been observed to cause spurts in mental development & (if not badly managed!) it matures the immune system - the Lancet (1985) published that it reduces the risk of cancer in later life & Swiss drs use measles to resolve nephrotic syndrome.
Bronwyn Hancock, Vaccination Information Service, Sydney, Australia
1,000 measles cases? Trivial ! And the disease is easily treated. Your kids are more likely to be struck by lightning than to risk dying from measles, mumps and rubella. So stuff the dependency cukture. And note that GPs are seriously overpaid for giving jabs.
F Kimbal Johnson, Louth,Lincsu, uk
Why aren't we reading 'Thousands of children are being offered the Measles jab' like they should have been all along - Is no-one in the media able to see this obvious and common sense solution? MMR is NuLab authoritarianism, why are individual vaccines not available in this country?
Andrew Iddon, London, UK
Because, Margaret, rubella and mumps are also very serious diseases. Two immunisations are better than six. There is no other agenda, just plain old-fashioned common sense.
David, Otago, NZ
Please, if measles is such a high risk disease and we want to avoid our children getting it, can we have a single vaccine for it? Otherwise, is there another agenda here?
Margaret Stewart , Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire
