WHAT IS IT? An intense exfoliation, which effectively removes dead skin cells from the surface of the face. The procedure is carried out using a hand-held machine, which blasts tiny aluminium oxide or salt crystals at the skin. This action helps to stimulate the cells in the lower layers of the skin to produce more collagen and elastic fibres, which makes the skin look rejuvenated and leaves its surface feeling soft and smooth.
SEE a cosmetic doctor who is registered with the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors (0800 3283613) and whose clinic is registered with the Healthcare Commission (020-7448 9200). Although the procedure has been used by beauticians for about 15 years, in the past two years cosmetic doctors have started using new and more powerful machines, which pose a higher risk if used incorrectly. For a milder treatment, see a beautician who is a member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (0845 0659000).
TAKES around 30 minutes.
ASK what experience the practitioner has in the treatment, whether the procedure is suitable for your skin type and what results you can expect. Check whether you are likely to need one or multiple treatments.
SUITABLE for anyone up to the age of 70 with light skin — it’s not suitable for those of Asian or African origin as microdermabrasion can cause erratic increases in pigmentation. It is particularly recommended for women and men in their forties and fifties whose skinis damaged as a result of too much sun exposure.
AVOID if you have skin inflammation from conditions such as eczema, psoriasis or acne.
PAIN FACTOR Minimal, as the treatment is superficial.
FREQUENCY Microdermabrasion can be a one-off treatment to increase the skin’s radiance, or repeated monthly over six to eight months as a treatment for acne scars or fine lines. It can also be used as a precursor to treatments such as chemical peels, allowing them to work more effectively by removing dead skin.
COMPLICATIONS None, other than with darker skin. Anyone who has had the treatment should wear sunscreen for a few days afterwards, as the skin will be more sensitive than usual.
COMPLAINTS Contact the doctor, beautician or clinic initially. If you have been treated by a doctor, the Healthcare Commission has a complaints procedure. If still dissatisfied, seek legal advice.
COST for treatment by a doctor is about £90 a session. Treatment by a beautician is usually cheaper.
