The causes of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of winter depression that affects half a million people in the UK every year, aren't clear. But Dr Marcus Roberts, of the mental health charity Mind, says there are simple ways to alleviate the symptoms. Here he picks the best products to lift your spirits this winter.

Massage

Becoming run-down over the winter will make anyone suffering SAD feel a lot worse.

So try to avoid stress and remember to take time out for yourself. Relaxation exercises such as yoga, Pilates or t'ai chi can help you to unwind. Or treat yourself to a massage, which can relieve tense muscles, lethargy, headaches and anxiety.

When looking for a therapist make sure that he or she has insurance and is registered with a body that has a code of ethics and a complaints procedure. An hour's massage should cost between £30 and £50.

GET A PAINT JOB

Dark paint absorbs light and can make a room dull and unwelcoming. Brighten up spaces you spend a lot of time in with a fresh coat of light-coloured or white paint, to reflect more light. Add a splash of colour with cushions and accessories; green is said to be good for the nerves and red inspires energy. Make sure that you open your curtains to let in maximum light during the day.
