The G is for Grafenberg, by the way, after Ernst Grafenberg, the German gynaecologist who identified it in the 1950s. Grafenberg’s research caused a minor flurry of fascination at the time. However, within ten years his findings had been overshadowed by a surge of interest in another area of female sensitivity — the clitoris — and, since approximately about 80 per cent of women can’t reach orgasm without clitoral stimulation, it proved to be a more popular line of inquiry.
Throughout the Sixties and Seventies, this magic bean, with its 8,000 nerve endings, became a symbol of sexual liberation to a generation of feminists who demanded the right to reach orgasm. But then, in 1981, the sexologists Whipple and Perry published a revolutionary book called The G-spot, which revisited Grafenberg’s research and elaborated on the fantastic sexual possibilities hiding inside the vagina.
Unfortunately, those possibilities turned out to be rather too well hidden. Despite much prodding and poking by academics and ordinary mortals alike, no one could quite put the finger on what or where the G-spot was.
In 2002, Dr Terence Hines, a professor of psychology at Pace University, New York, published a report in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology which claimed that evidence for the existence of the G-spot was no more than anecdotal. He reviewed all the research and concluded that the G-spot was “a sort of gynaecological UFO: much searched for, much discussed, but unverified by objective means”.
Its existence had been based on a handful of females who were examined behaviourally to see if a G-spot existed and only 4 out of 12 women showed signs of increased sensitivity.
Despite the confusion, lots of women “have discovered a soft area just behind the pubic bone that just needs to be touched for great pleasure”. To find out where you stand you need to do the following.
Wait until you are feeling sexually aroused, then place one or two fingers about 2½in (6.5cm) into your vagina along the line of the urethra. Keep your thumb on your pelvic bone, just above your pubic hair on the outside, and inside the vagina press your finger into the front wall as if you are trying to press up towards your thumb.
You are looking for an area which feels possibly slightly swollen and more sensitive than the other vaginal tissue.
The G-spot needs to be pressed quite firmly and it might make you feel as if you need to pee. If you are close to orgasm, rapid pumping may be more effective, but as it is difficult to maintain this pressure for long, try using a curved G-spot vibrator or dildo. Alternatively, find someone with a nice bedside manner.
