Most of us feel sad or miserable at times, but when these feelings are more severe than usual, go on for too long or interfere with everyday life, it often indicates that depression has become an illness.
This simple set of ten questions will assess your mood. If you answer yes to a few or more of the questions and have felt that way for a substantial period of time it may be an indicator of depression. If you agree with number 10, we would suggest you contact your GP immediately.
1. Do you feel unhappy most of the time?
2. Are you finding it hard to cope with things that used to be manageable?
3. Have you lost interest and enjoyment in activities that you used to enjoy?
4. Are you finding it harder to make decisions?
5. Are you having trouble sleeping?
6. Have you experienced a loss of appetite or have you lost weight?
7. Are you feeling worn out and tired?
8. Do you lack self-confidence in areas that you used to feel competent in?
9. Have you been avoiding other people or friends?
10. Do you ever contemplate suicide as a way out of your problems?

Diagnosed clinically depressed in 2000. 9 months off work (school teacher). Managed to fight my way through & get back to work fulltime. Generally OK until wife left me 2 years ago. Since divorced her. Bringing son up by myself. No friends - they disappear when you need them. Constantly depressed.
Mark Bebbington, Higham Ferrers, England.
all these symtoms plus some others are the same as having a vitamin B12 deficiency, once I had my first jab I was able to work, to concentrate, to not feel that I was dragging myself about.

Mary, Derby - + unable to leave the house, panic attacks, living in a mess where it used to be clean and tidy - I went through all of this, the items in the questionnaire, your items and mine - except suicide! Thank God! Mental ward; had to give away my child (6) in May '08 - doesn't make it better.

Davey, Cornwall - please think about getting some help.

It should really be pointed out that there are other classic 'depressive' reactions like sleeping too much, gaining weight and perhaps the biggest one of all stopping looking after yourself. By this I mean stopping washing, changing clothes etc, which may include stopping eating or over eating.
Mary, Derby, England
Definitely depressed but 10 just brings glee to enemies. To quote a deceased local poet "Life is just a knackers yard, dyings easy its the living thats hard". IMHO the UK is the biggest open prison in the world. "Le grand Alcatraz" I call it. Cold, wet, dear fags, booze, petrol to pay for CCTV etc
